    Hi All,

I just got a new set of research :jumping: (thanks Marco ). ORS #955,661 to Yakov Antonovich Sviridovich. Any help translating is very much appreciated, as always!

    Thanks!

    First, the medal.

I just noticed that in the topic title and in my first post I misnumbered the ORS as 955,661 instead of 935,661. I can't fix it because the editor isn't cooperating :banger:

    Changed title serial number.

You have a Captain in aerial photography-- I'd ask for his service record. :catjava:

Captain, born 1906 in the village of Yachenko, Samokhvalovichsky Raion, Minskoi Oblast. Not a member of the Party, middle education. White Russian by Soviet "nationality."

In Red Army April 1927 to January 1930 and again "since July 1941"

Decorated as and serving as (ARC filled out 22 January 1946) Squadron Navigator (Shturman Eskvadrila) of the 3rd Independent Aviation "Order of the Red Banner" Battalion (Russian word "Division" here is same as German "Abteilung" not division- Division) of Signals of the GVF (whatever THAT was-- do not know what abbreviation stands for :banger: ) in 10th Aviation Regiment.

    Awards--

Red Star 935,661 on 3 November 1944 (long service Ukaz)

Red Banner 211,450 on 31.05.45 per decree of 2nd White Russiaan Front

Medals for Defense of Leningrad, Moscow, and Caucasus (!) and Victory Over Germany Medal

The nomination was prepared in September 1944 for the mass long service bestowals of November. Shows that he had not been wounded. At the time the citation was filled out he was only a Senior Lieutenant.

This is a general (as all these were) "he's an all around good Comrade" type text-- "In the unit since July 1941 as Squadron Navigator (they loved repetition)... training navigational higher theory to pilots... (something about) young pilots with 2,629 hours of flying time of which 1,057 hours in the battalion (Huh?)... disciplined... politically reliable... morally strong... devoted to Party of Lenin-and-Stalin and his socialist homeland...."

Papperwork processed 24 September 1944 by Commander of the 10th Regiment Major Pakhomov and all the way upo the chain of command to

Marshal of Aviation (Fedor Alekseevich) Astakhov (1892-1966 per Steen Ammentorp's WW2 generals' website which has NO details-- I never heard of him EITHER) as Commander of Main Administration of

    you guessed it

    the mysteriously cryptic "GVF."

March 1927 to January 1930 Cadet/student at Leningrad Military Theoretical School of the Air Force (VVS)

February 1930 to July 1941) Aerial (photographer?) at Sevastapolskaya Main Administration of Geodetics and Cartography (so made aerial maps)

From July 1941 to present date Squadron Navigator in 3rd Independent Aviation "Order of the Red Banner" Battalion of Signals of the "GVF."

You might also want to ask for the citation on his missing Red Banner to see what he "really" DID during the war.

    Thanks so much, Rick! :cheers::jumping:

I looked up Marshall Astakhov. Steen's site actually did have a little bit about him:

    http://www.generals.dk/general/Astakhov/Fedor_Alekseevich/Soviet_Union.html

From 1942-1943 he was deputy commander in chief of the air force and commanding officer of civil aviation. So "GVF" is indeed the Civil Air Fleet (thanks Auke!).

I'll work on getting the service record and maybe the citation for the ORB.

    Thanks again

    :Cat-Scratch: Aeroflot!!!!

Whehn I looked at Steen's website last night, all I got for the Marshal was a BLANK page under his names and birth-death year. Nothing else displayed.

Just a random "loose" Red Star with no Orders Book or anything?

    You're as lucky as Paul!

Me? I get "teakettles" Mekh! :cheeky:
