Yup. Professor Dr.med. Peter Esch, born 20 December 1874.

    1 Year Volunteer 01.04.95

Apparently commissioned 1900 (never seen that style of shoulder boards before for the navy)

Marine Oberstabsarzt der Seewehr I 27.01.16--

he had a VERY odd wartime career, being "on leave" December 1915 to July 1917, and again without naval duties October 1917 to August 1918. Yet somehow he showed a combatant (!) EK2 in the February 1918 Navy Rank List. Will check him in the Naval Doctors WW1 and see if more explanation is given of his odd war service.

Charakterisiert Marine Generaloberarzt (then = Oberstleutnant) d SW I aD 22.04.21.

    In 1939 Direktor, Universitäts-Frauenklinik Münster.

From the :speechless1: named Marine Oberstabsarzt dR aD Dr. H. HARMS ZUM SPRECKEL's 1919 "Stammliste des Marine-Sanitäts-Offizierekorps"--

Dr. Esch had a combination of years of regular and reserve service. He would have received a PrLD1 circa 1920 not shown here. Still no explanation of what he was doing wandering around during the war NOT in the navy, or how he got a "combatant" Iron Cross--

Really interesting career-if I read that correctly he did TWO stints as a one year volunteer. From Chinese expedition "MASH" Doctor to one of Germanys' (and the world's) premier gynecologists. Marburg is not exactly a third rate university.

From a quick google search it appears as if he was offered the Chair at Munster University in 1922.

He has GOT to be in Wer Ist Wer from the 1930s.

Right you are. Heiko's breakthrough came too late last night local time here on the island to continue.

    1935 "Wer Ist's?" entry:

(I'm still trying to figure out how Dr. E. gained experience as a NAVAL GYNECOLOGIST! :speechless1::cheeky: )

    Rick,

Apparently commissioned 1900 (never seen that style of shoulder boards before for the navy)

The the black-white-red piping and silver braid around the shoulder strap was introduced for the naval Einjährig-Freiwilliger-Arzt (One Year Volunteer Medical Doctor) in 1872.

    Regards

    Glenn
