Mervyn Mitton
A most interesting post - but, I agree with Dan - the Grasscutter naming must be almost unique. Does that mean my gardener is eligible to a medal ?
Guest Darrell
Maybe it was the "other" kind of grass that the officers dipped into
paul wood
Maybe it was the "other" kind of grass that the officers dipped into Grass cutter is a scarce rank but they do turn up, they were an essential part of the S&T providing fodder for horses, mules and camels a much rarer rank (and I have seen one on a bronze PF and Malkand) is a Grass Mule attendant (probably stopped the blighters eating themselves to death) Paul
Guest Darrell
As promised earlier in the thread: 4. Instituted 22nd December 1853 after the Pegu campaign - with a recommendation being approved three months later to issue further bars for the same medal for any future campaigns and actions. Titled the "India General Service Medal" but the geographical range covered by this medal is much larger, including Persia and Malaya. Description: 36mm diameter silver or bronze. Obverse - the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the legend "VICTORIA REGINA". Reverse depicts the winged figure of Victory crowning a seated warrior with a wreath. Naming : Generally early issues impressed - later engraved. Ribbon: red, with two dark blue stripes. Bars: twenty four, see below for details. He was entitled to the IGSM 1854-95 w/ JOWAKI 1877-8 Clasp. He was also involved shortly afterward in the 2nd Afghan War earning the "Ali Musjid" Clasp. As for the IGSM with this JOWAKI Clasp, the naming style is correct: JOWAKI 1877-8 8th November 1877 - 19th January 1878 Impressed serif capitals The later medals with Clasps were usually "script" engraved to British Troops.
