Ackley's book, "In the Name of a Living God", I may be able to shed some light on the different sizes question. The larger version seems to have been the first issue which was awarded from the date of the founding of the Society in 1910 until the early Showa period. I would highly recommend the book, however, beware that it may increase your desire to collect more Japanese badges. It's too late for me as Paul and Steven have me hooked.
