Corabia Alex Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Good evening, After looking at a few topics and searching for the keywords in the title, I've decided to ask for an opinion: can anyone identify what this man is wearing?
Corabia Alex Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 Back of the pic + another 16:9 smaller one:
Corabia Alex Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 Perhaps someone who knows Hungarian will help solve the mystery This is the back of the small picture
Corabia Alex Posted April 7, 2011 Author Posted April 7, 2011 These pics were found at a trade in Deva, Romania; but the dealer was from Bucharest. I assume the emigrants were Romanians of Hungarian ethnicity.
JBFloyd Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 The second medal is an American Legion School Award (for current criteria, see http://www.legion.org/documents/pdf/schoolaward.pdf) I suspect the first medal is also an organizational award given to an outstanding student, but I can't see enough detail to be specific.
Corabia Alex Posted April 27, 2011 Author Posted April 27, 2011 Well thank you very much! I see the ribbon is the same, but the .pdf file shows only one side of the medal, and the one here has two soldiers going in opposite directions. Do you think it`s a mismatch of ribbon+medal?
JBFloyd Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 The two soldiers design was a variant they used. I've seen an explanation of the various designs, but cannot find it right now.
hunyadi Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 After rough translating the back of the photo it seems our young man is writing to relatives and explaining that he has not heard from them in a long time etc... he does mention that he has five medals, but cant recall what they are all for. I would guess by the age and the circumstances that his family probably escaped Hungary before the War - possibly for being Jewish - or possibly for other reasons - border disputes post WWI. Sorry thats about all I can add. Its interesting that this photo went from the USA to Hungary or Romania -
Kev in Deva Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Great picture and some interesting info contained with it. You have the guys name, including Family name, the fact that he way in the Chicago area. Some type of Legion cadet, dated to 1949, I wonder if he went into the military during the Korean War time.? He writes on the front naming his Romanian.Hungarian relatives, Auntie Irene, Uncle Dumetrie, Cousin Raduie (?) I wonder is it possible to do any form of online search in the USA about him. Kevin in Deva.
