In Ulaan Baatar right now, and i MAY have found out a little bit more on Sorkin in a local museum - the museum is the "Victims of Political Persecution Memorial Museum"... so that should give a hint (think Cambodian killing fields but on smaller scale)... pics to be posted when I'm back home.

Some pics from the mentioned museum (i'll spare you the room with skulls with bullet holes...). Sorkin had interesting "friends" in high places...

First the museum, the former house of Peljidiin Genden who was the second President (1924 to 1927) and the ninth Prime Minister (1932–1936) of Mongolia. He was purged and executed in Russia in 1937 - interesting story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peljidiin_Genden

What's even better, I got to meet up with a fellow forum member in UB who is also the author of a great recent book on Mongolian awards. More on that later, as he was able to show me some real treasures!, but he also found another photo of Sorkin in his own collection.

I forgot the pic...

Thumbing through more pictures i took in the aforementioned museum, turns out Sorkin was involved in the so called "Lhumbe affair" in which "311 people were convicted of being counter-revolutionaries and political dissidents and accused of a conspiring to overthrow the communist government with the help and under the instruction of the imperialist government of Japan." Will post pic referring to this later, but some more hints below.

Colonel Sorkin N. S. is a well trained and experienced officer. He skillfully organized the work of his subordinates for the accomplishment of the assignments set by the Command. In 1943, the units under his command demonstrated good results in preparing and implementing the assignments.

He possesses a good knowledge of the nature of his work and gained needed skills. He skillfully manages the subordinates in units. He is dedicated to the cause of the Party of Lenin-Stalin and the Socialist Motherland.

Comrade Sorkin is well developed in all aspects. He is an honest commander and works under extensive work load. He deserves to be recommended for the government award: the Order of the Red Banner.
