Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) Hi all, I picked up some interesting photos last week and I would like to share them with you and also learn if some expert willing to share here. Mainly I am interested what type/period uniforms are on the pictures, what units some of the soldiers served and also their ranks. There is as well two regimental badges or school badges to ID. Any other info and comments are welcome! Enjoy! 1. soldier Is this pre 1912 soldier's uniform? Like I understand he served in 676thSenkovskaja Infantry Regiment (676-й пехотный Сеньковский полк)? I presume his medal is just some unofficial jeton because the ribbon and its attachment. 2. is this man an officer or cadet? I can't figure out any stars on the pogoni, so I think is it correct to quess that he was a cadet? Also gymnastiorka looks like enlisted men one? Belt looks very weird or something what I haven't seen. Edited February 13, 2012 by Noor
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 3. an officer? I really don't know what to think about this picture. To me he looks like an officer - pogoni, sword, also uniform looks better quality, buttons, etc. Meantime there is only some badge on his right chest and thats about it. Weirdest thing - why to keep a revolver on the ground, next to his left feet??? 4. Sailor I presume this sailor served on the armored cruiser "Admiral Makarov" (1906), what mainly stationed and fought as a part of the Baltic Fleet.
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) 5. Soldier This picture is very small and I can't zoom in much. Looks like shoulder board shows unit number 172 and two letters under it. Is there any hawk to ID his unit? If it is 172, is it then - Lida172ndInfantry Regiment(Лидский 172-й пехотный полк) 6. soldier I am not even 100% sure is this imperial era but I presume so (I am just learning). Hat looks weird to me. In this case what type of uniform he is wearing and what can be the stripe - whistle? Is it Calvary? Edited February 13, 2012 by Noor
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) 7. NCO Now I know he was Sergeant (cтарший унтер-офицер). Still, from what period this photo was taken - 1912-1918? 8. soldier Soldier from 459th Miropolsky Infantry Regiment (459-й пехотный Миропольский полк). Is those trouses post Russo-Japanese war up to 1912 issue or WW1 period? Edited February 13, 2012 by Noor
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) 9. decorated soldier Is this brave man Corporal (Jefreitor). Like I understand he has St.George Cross 4th Class and bravery medal (turned around??). I am not able to read out unit number.... maybe 49 or 79??? If 49, then is it famous 49th Brest Infantry Regiment (49-й пехотный Брестский полк)? 10. Imperator Grenadier Guards I just LOVE that picture. One of the most decorated and famous units at all. Their insignia, aiguilettes, etc are so well seen on this. Edited February 13, 2012 by Noor
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 11. Soldier To me its looks like this man served in the same unit as the men on the previous picture (No.10) but I am not 100% sure. Just "E" and the imperial crown on the pogoni looks like the same unit? Does anyone know whats the badge what he has next to the medal? 12. three men Who are these guys? One looks like is Sergeant??? (left) and one has number "92" on his cap (right). Any help would be great. Are they army at all or some kind a civilians from table of ranks?
Noor Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 (edited) 13. three soldiers My next favorite! Who mainly worn these hats? Cossacs or Calvary? What uniforms they have and also one badge. I think I have seen it but I can't figure out where. Some how almost remaind a pilot badge. 14. Ensign Its a real shame that the picture is damaged but I still got it because I like it. Now I know the badge has to be Northern Front Ensigns School (Школа прапорщиков Северного фронта) Edited February 13, 2012 by Noor
Noor Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 15. Soldier Very small photo. Not muh to see. 16. Two civilians Only reason why I took that shot is the medal what is over painted. Very intersting way to point out his honour.
Noor Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 I did more homework today and found some unit names behind numbers, also I was able to ID one of the badges. Any help here would be great! Regards, Timo aka Noor

If so, he would be ditching those shoulder boards pretty soon.

I think I have seen it but I can't figure out where. Some how almost remaind a pilot badge. Rifle regiments wore these fur hats. See http://marksrussianmilitaryhistory.info/RUSS1914.html for the ones as they were in 1914.

No, not Life-Guards Grenadiers, one of the cuirassier regiments.
Mark C Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 I think up to around 1900 the number on the cap was the regimental number.
Sajkaca Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 No, not Life-Guards Grenadiers, one of the cuirassier regiments. 6.Glukhovskii Dragoon Rgt.
