What's weird is that some are Saxons and some are Prussians. Some have dark shoulder straps, and some have light.

Thanks. I didn't know that Prussians and Saxons could serve in the same regiment.

In 1914, the 7. and 8. Kompanie of Eisenbahn-Regiment Nr. 1 were Saxon. Incidentally, the 4. Kompanie of Eisenbahn-Regiment Nr. 4 was from Württemberg.
