rocketscientist Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I need to get opinions on this 1st class Patriotic War Order. In general, it looks very nice but the golden star is strange... does not seem to be solid gold, or maybe it is but with some discoloration that I cannot explain. Please have a look to the pictures and share your comments. Thank you.
rocketscientist Posted June 16, 2012 Author Posted June 16, 2012 (edited) ...and this is it in pieces Edited June 16, 2012 by rocketscientist
JapanX Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 (edited) Well it looks ok to me. Type 2, variation 2.... The star looks like correct gold one (it should weight around 15 g) As for discoloration - I think this is spreaded silver paint from rifle and saber Another argument for gold - this silver paint completely gone from bottom part of rifle butt and we can see gold ... Cheers, Nick Edited June 17, 2012 by JapanX
rocketscientist Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Thank you, Nick. To my knowledge the rear star of the OGPW1 should be of 14k solid gold and not painted. It is then surprising to see there areas of dark metal which could suggest forgery. cheers
JapanX Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 (edited) Thank you, Nick. To my knowledge the rear star of the OGPW1 should be of 14k solid gold and not painted. It is then surprising to see there areas of dark metal which could suggest forgery. cheers Please re-read my post carefully And you will see that I wrote that the star is made in gold. But the rifle and saber are painted (actually oxidized). Traces of this oxidization on reverse you are calling "dark metal". If you are so suspicious simply make a deep scratch on this "dark metal" and you will see gold under P.S. The weight of rear gold star actually varies between 9 g (min) and 15 g (max). rocketscientist Posted June 18, 2012 Author Posted June 18, 2012 I read again your post and it is very clear, sorry for the confusion. The golden star in this case is about 10g. It looks that some previous owner else had the same idea about scratching, look at this picture. Thank you Nick for your help, I think it was extremely useful. cheers sergio
