Dieter3 Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Recently arrived. Pretty good condition overall. Nick, what do you think - WWII-ish?
JapanX Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Very nice! This one was made between 1940 and 1945. Congratulations
Alex K Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 That is one seriously fantastic award, I wish I had one.
Dieter3 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 That is one seriously fantastic award, I wish I had one. Hi Alex, Don't wish for one, just acquire! Fortunately, the 6th class isn't too expensive so you should be able to find a nice one for a reasonable price

Dieter3 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Well, you do not sound stupid at all for asking such a question My observations place these in the $120-$160 range. I paid right around $130.00 for this one, and I was quite happy with that price given the condition.

Hi Dieter3, are you serious?, I don't have much to throw around but for that price show where I can find one!!
Dieter3 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 Yep! Totally serious! Just gotta keep your eyeballs peeled! They do show up. These are not rare awards, so you will be able to find a good one without too much trouble.
medalrat Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 JapanX, How can you tell the date is 1940-1945? Thank you.
JapanX Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Configuration of the rays. + Silver kanji on the case lid.
medalrat Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Thanks. Is there reference material that describes the ray configuration / timeline?
JapanX Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Somewhere around 1938-1940 (I don`t remember the exact date right now ) this configuration was changed to this Cheers, Nick
medalrat Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Somewhere around 1938-1940 (I don`t remember the exact date right now ) this configuration 1.JPG was changed to this 2.JPG Cheers, Nick Thanks Nick, It looks like the main difference is the three short rays were shortened in the later version. Did this hold true for all classes? Barry
JapanX Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) No. Only for 6th class. You see, originally 4th, 5th and 6th classes had same configuration of rays and same ribbons. They can be distinguished only by gold gilt. Not an easy task! Especially when patina kick in So in 1886 they decided to add rosette to the ribbon of 4th class to make it more recognisable. JapanX Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 More than half century later they decided that it`s time to make 6th class more recognisable So they shortened some of its rays
medalrat Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I see. It makes dating 4th and 5th classes rather difficult. And given that the silver kanji only really dates the box, one needs to be sure that the box and the medal are an original pair. Thanks for shedding light on the matter.
