Paul R
Did this denote a special unit or specialty, or some short lived prewar insignia regulation? I have not seen any photos with the double insignia before.
Robin Lumsden
Paul. When army style shoulder straps were introduced, it was felt that the standard SS collar insignia of rank was no longer needed. Accordingly, around October 1939, it was ordered that the rank patch be removed for W-SS.. From October 1939 until May 1940, when the collar rank insignia was reintroduced for wear since the camouflage smock was covering the shoulder badges, dual insignia were authorized. After May 1940, the use of the dual collar insignia was forbidden.

Paul R
Nice portrait. So did the same go for the "SS" tabs as well?
Robin Lumsden
Yes ................ but mirrored runes are much rarer.
Paul R
I would have thought that the runes would have been more common. Did this rule apply to the enlisted grades as well?

Paul R
Hi Eric, I am still not a fan of the outer piping on the linked tabs. Robin, what are your thoughts? Regards Paul
