andy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 HiI have had this badge for some time and never known what it is. It has been suggested that it may be Russian although I have no idea if this is the case. Does anyone know what it is?regardsandy
Wood Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Well the mark on the back is a British registration mark, this will tell you when these were made, Victorian period I believe.Regards,Pete

Chuck In Oregon Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 A quick scan through a couple of references doesn't show anything like it.If it's really a badge, it almost seems like it's not all there, although there's no sign of damage. With the eagles below the center line, you might think there should be a unit or branch or some other kind of insignia above. I think that most badges had the eagles at or above center.OTOH, the back is distinctive. Could this possibly be a belt buckle, or part of one? Not necessarily a waist belt, but some kind of belt. If that loop attaches at both ends, as it appears, I can't think of how else your example would attach to something else.Just guessing here, as must be painfully evident.Chuck
Guest Rick Research Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 That British hallmark is going to be precise TO THE DAY it was made. I've seen the same sorts of marks on Victorian glassware... just can't put my hands on a copy of the key to interpreting what = what to "read" it. You MAY want to post this in the Masonic Forum. I know the BRITISH Lodges apparently did not use this "Russian eagle" but it WAS used by other countries including the U.S. It may be an export item for overseas Masons.

I seem to remember a similar badge discussed on WAF. St. George is a Russian symbol too. Could it be a British regiment with Tsar Nicholas as Chef? After all, Germany, Britain and Russia were one big happy family. Edited February 24, 2006 by Tom Y
Wood Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 (edited) Here'd the registration mark list. The same mark appears on glass, ceramic and metal etc. I would also doubt that it would be applied to any official military badge of that time. i.e the above badge is of a civilian nature.Regards,Pete Edited February 24, 2006 by wood
