Maybe Company level runners had pistols? I am guessing who got the units pistols was something officially established, and runners probably changed so often.... no point wasting a good pistol on a guy who may leave the bunker and never be seen again.....

Good point. A regimental runner would probably use it more against the rats than the enemy.

Regimental runners would deliver messages to either higher HQ or Bn HQs correct? Neither of those were in the front line so perhaps the need for a weapon was not as great as the need for speed.
