here is the front, "12" on the shoulder straps...

I assume the family name is Vogel, but cannot pick up a first name?

Can anyone read anything out of it?

Hi Chris I agree with Bernhard.

Andreas Vogel born 21/12/1897 in Augsburg.

Awarded EK2 on 15/6/17 and MVK3X on 1/7/17.

For a latecomer he sure had an eventful time all documented on Ancestry.

Interestingly he also signs himself Andi Vogel in the Regimental ledgers.

Thanks for the pointer... found it!

So it seems this "sturmgruppe" was actually before he made it to the front, it was in the Divisional Feldrekrutendepot, which was more or less a "just behind the front " - advanced Basic training.

He rose pretty fast in the ranks!
