David M Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Hi, in 1915 there is a mentioning of Oblt Ernst Wiehr. Would it be possible to find out more about this officer? My interest in him is that he is a relation through the maternal grandmother of my grandfather. Yeah I know its a bit far off, but well genealogy let me to my interest in ODM to begin with :-) thanks in advance regards David
Glenn J Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 David, in peacetime his occupation was that of a teacher. In 1911, he was a Seminar-Direktor in Hadersleben. He had been awarded a Swedish Wasa Order Knight's Cross in 1898. Leutnant der Landwehr: 22.3.00 H4h. He retired from Landwehr service on 21 January 1913. Reactivated for service in WW1, he was promoted to Oberleutnant der Landwehr a.D. on 17.10.14 whilst serving the Ersatz-Batallion of Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 48. Regards Glenn
Dave Danner Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Ernst Franz August, born 20 January 1870 in Berlin. He was the son of Militäreffekten-Fabrikant and Sgt. Julius Wiehr. He received his Dr.phil. on 17 December 1892 from the University of Berlin and in 1894 entered the Prussian higher school service. His dissertation was on "Die Strategie des Kronprinzen von Schweden, Hagelberg und Dennewitz. Napoleon und Bernadotte im Herbstfeldzug 1813". It was translated into Swedish and published in Sweden in 1985 as "Napoleon och Bernadotte under Höstfälttåget 1813". That's probably why he got the Vasaorden. He was a one-year volunteer in 2.Garde-Regiment zu Fuß from 1.10.1889 to 30.9.1890. Wiehr was lightly wounded in mid-1915 while serving in 2.Komp./Res.-Inf.-Regt. Nr. 270. Regards, Dave
David M Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 Thank you both, gentlemen! Funny thing is hat my grandfather (b. 1920 d.2000) was Ernst August Müldner. So maybe, just maybe he was named after this relation. Info was great and very quick as always! Regards David
Dave Danner Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) Probably more likely that both were named after Ernst August I, König von Hannover. There were lots of people from Hannoverian and Braunschweig families with Ernst August in their names. Edited September 23, 2014 by Dave Danner
David M Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 Yeah I know, my grandfathers brother was not named Hermann George for no reason. Familysaga has it his grandfather (b. 1857) really hated the prussians for invading his country
