Chris Boonzaier Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I was hoping to get this... but it went too high... am sure I will regret it more as time passes... http://www.ebay.de/itm/Regenumhang-Kaiserreich-Alpenkorps-BAI-1916-Kammerstueck-Verdun-/252115049896?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEDWX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=nWK0I54iRh8WUMTGksCpCmD%2BBYE%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Chip Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Chris,Sorry you didn't get it, but I am happy to see that they have gone up in value. I paid about $300 for one back in 1992 and I thought at the time that maybe I paid too much.
Hoss Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 ChipMay we see your example, I'm not 100% on the ebay job.Eric
Chip Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Eric,I don't understand your skepticism, as the piece looks fine to me. There was a Radfahrerumhang, and a Regen-Umhang, the difference being that the latter was 20cm shorter than the Radfahrer pattern. Certainly, they were not issued widely (originally only 5% of the troops) and thus the reason you seldom see them in photos. As the war went on, more were ordered and their use became more widespread. The one shown on the officer is the same general type of garment, but the officer model had a wool collar and has other attributes that enlisted ones lack. Here are some rather poor photos of my example.Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 (edited) The ebay one is exactly the same as the one in the bavarian Army museum, shown in the Kraus book? The RAdfahrer units were a tiny fraction of the army, I guess we will have to wait a loooong time to see a period photo of one in wear. Chris Boonzaier Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 All the examples I have seen (now a grand total of 3!) are dated 1916.... what did they use before?
Chip Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Other than the Zeltbahn, I don't think there was any special rain gear for enlisted men before 1916. Kraus mentions that a raincoat (of Zeltbahntuch) was introduced for Macedonian front use in 1916. A waterproof Umhang was introduced in the winter of 1916/17. This was the one similar to the Radfahrerumhang, only shorter. The Radfahrerunhang (again, according to Kraus) was made of a waterproof "Manteltuch" and had a Capote (hood) built in under the collar. Manteltuch, says wool to me. The Radfahrerumhang had been around since 1911.
Hoss Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Chip your example is killer thanks for showing. There was one on an ebay a few years ago didn't I show it on waf? I was outbid DK got the blighter I think.Eric
Hoss Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Is this one of those raincoats? worn by me MG dude. Eric
Chip Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I'd say so. It appears too long to be an Umhang.
dond Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Damn Eric, that album has a bit of everything in it.
