A picture is worth a thousand words: the building in the photo looks like the building in the postcard posted by Paja. Can you comment on the inscription above the gates? Now some background information. I have found the photo among some old papers from my wife’s side. Her great grandfather, a Transylvanian Saxon, (photo below), had been in the Austrian army but no other details were available except a move to Prague between 1917-1918 with his whole family. I have mentioned him before on the forum but the photos have disappeared there. From your posts I suspect that he served in the 2nd Hungarian Infantry Regiment and he was probably posted in Metalka, Bosnia before 1899. Can anyone spot him in the photo? After that he married a girl from Bistrita (Bistritz or Nösen) and they had a daughter in 1902. I would appreciate if you can give any other information about the regiment and its moves. Another photo from the family albums is a new reason to revive this thread. I think the man in the man in the photo below is the same as in the photo above, but a few years later. Any information on the rank, uniform or awards is much appreciated. The photo seems to have been taken in Vienna, but unfortunately is not dated.
Christian1962 Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I can just tell you that he is a "Militärbeamter Rangklasse XI" - titled "Akzessist" which is an euqivalent to lieutenant. He is wearing the 1898 Jubilee Medal for soldiers which shows us that he was active soldier in this time. And he is wearing the 1908 Jubilee Cross for civil servants which shows us that he must be in the reserve then. We can't define which branch he is. This is defined by the colour of his collar. Regards Christian
Carol I Posted August 18 Author Posted August 18 (edited) Dear Christian, Thank you very much for your details. Based on yours and others input I might have reconstructed part of the career and trajectory of my wife’s great grandfather, Eduard Victor Gürtesch. As a young Korporal in Bistrita (Bistritz or Nösen) As Zugsführer or Feldwebel in Sarajevo (most likely before 1898) As Zugsführer or Feldwebel after 1898 in Bistrita (Bistritz or Nösen) with the 1898 Signum Memoriae As Zugsführer or Feldwebel in 1903 in unknown location, with the 1898 Signum Memoriae (I would very much like to read the details in the postcard to his mother, as he makes references to Plevlje in it - see next photo) As Fähnrich in Metalka/Plevlje (probably after 1903). There were some suggestions that he must have been with the 2nd Hungarian Infantry Regiment before 1899, but he has higher rank than in 1903. As Militärbeamter Rangklasse XI (military official in rank class XI) after 1908 in Vienna with the 1898 Signum Memoriae and the 1908 Jubilee Cross for civil servants In Prague in 1917-1918 as part of the Austrian (military) postal service [no photo] As oficiant grad I (grade I official) in the Romanian postal service in Suceava in the 1920s (this was his service ID) I assumed that it is one and the same person in all these photos. Let me know if you do not think this is the case or if there is any other information that does not add up. Thank you all for your input. Edited August 18 by Carol I 1
