paul kennedy Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 I've just acquired this sword, and I have a question about the inscription. I've always known these swords as artillery swords. However, every artillery sword I've seen with inscriptions always mention feld artillery or fuss artillery. I'm curious about the "1 Batt. Regt. No 50" Would this be an infantry regiment? Thanks in advance.
GreyC Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Hi, as far as i know, there was no FuAR 50. The FeldAR 50 was founded in 1899 and from Karlsruhe. The IR 50 was from Posen. GreyC
paul kennedy Posted April 30, 2019 Author Posted April 30, 2019 Thank you for your reply. Would an artillery regiment ever be written as 1 Batt. Regt. No 50?
GreyC Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 (edited) Yes. An Artillerie-Regiment is divided into (2) Abteilungen which are subdivided into Batterien. 1st Batterie is part of 1st Abt. IR´s did not have Batterien. My guess is, because there was no FuArt 50 it seemed superflous to write FAR 50 as it was the only option. GreyC Edited April 30, 2019 by GreyC
paul kennedy Posted April 30, 2019 Author Posted April 30, 2019 (edited) That's right! I should have known. Batt. would never be battalion, as battalion would be abteilung in German. Thank you again. Edited April 30, 2019 by paul kennedy
