Flamethrower Groups and documents are a small sideline of mine... they do not cause much work as I only ever find things every 5-6 years to add to the small collection.... here is one to a young Flammenwerfer Pionier who joined the FW regt relatively late, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class for an attack on the positions in the Bois de Mättle at Sondernach in Alsace in June 1918, just a couple of weeks before the Americans took over the sector.

A description of the action was provided to the participants in a form printed by the 4th Cavalry Division (addressed to the participants). I am pretty happy with the group ?1Hauschke1.thumb.jpg.93247c172535ef08d9c88d53618c24ff.jpg1Hauschke2.thumb.jpg.999846cea99ffb4ff32c9905a33cd1ae.jpg1hauschke3.thumb.jpg.9b24c155602e44e44b48efa456933bf5.jpg1hauschke4.thumb.jpg.c24b418f8dbee6113c2432f09102c37a.jpg11hauschke4.thumb.jpg.a92e0aaf8f6e66ea338f8cc6afc6f321.jpg1hauschke6.thumb.jpg.d186b8e845fa4b7c481a38137b3f4498.jpg1hauschke7.thumb.jpg.2201a46882b99d27dd5374f37b8bb099.jpg1hauschke8.thumb.jpg.8af3259d22d7cd756fc095a54fb38077.jpg1hauschke9.thumb.jpg.c6961b105713e21bd40799d51c693c01.jpg

Neat.  From Flamethrower in WW1 to truck driver in WW2.  The other truck drivers must have thought of him as a god.

Or he constantly pissed off all the others by starting every sentence with "When I was in the flamethrowers...." ?

Super documents! That letter from the 4. Kavallerie-Division really fills things out. I did not know that type of thing was done. Of course, reports were made during and after the war, but printing them out and sending them to the participants is a new one on me.

Hi, yes indeed... I think it is copied from the French.... When a unit was cited in the French army the participants of the action got a document just like this with their name added confirming they were part of the action.

    Amazing group Chris!

dumb question, did these guys volunteer for the flamethrower units or were they just assigned randomly?   Were they just considered a pioneer assignment position, or specialized?
