Stuka f Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 From a house cleareance. A litlle pré 1930 Belgian Congo Chokwé chair. It looks like a chair, but it is not ment to sit on it. It is a relic a status symbol. It not big, looks like a toy or a children chair... They can fetch treamendous high prices on auctions.
peter monahan Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Can you give us a better idea of the size, please?
Stuka f Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Hey Peter, sure! It measures 48 m high , by 24 by 32 cm.
peter monahan Posted February 14, 2021 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) Thanks, Stuka. Sounds like it's definitely not meant to be sat on by big people. I wonder when a European style chair became a sign of rank in the Congo? Peter Edited February 14, 2021 by peter monahan
Stuka f Posted February 15, 2021 Author Posted February 15, 2021 Not just in Congo. The Chokwé people just didn't live only in Congo, in fact the Belgian Congo border did split theyr kingdom. The other part is situated in Angola. And it must have been in the late 17 th century that Chokwé's have been confontated with the European style chair.
Stuka f Posted March 22, 2021 Author Posted March 22, 2021 Found a chair showing great similarity's in the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin. Brought back in the early 1900's. Seen here with mine (on the right ).
