landsknechte
This is one that I've had for a while, but apparently never got around to posting. Anyhow, I'd be curious as to what if anything could be taken from the combination of ribbons. I'm guessing that the small numbers of decorations suggests that the recipient was a relatively junior officer, but does the Zähringer plus the Waldeck hint towards any particular unit(s)? Claudius
Hauptmann rank or higher. The lack of a LS ribbon is also notable.
webr55
I had a closer look at this one, quite tricky. There are not many candidates who had both the BZ3bXmE and the Waldeck - and no other awards. For a while, I thought it may have been Rittmeister Burchart von Saldern, but he was in Finland in 1918, so must have had Finnish awards. The only one I find with no other awards (though I didn't check all the awards lists) is Stabsarzt Dr. Karl Katz. He was in Kriegslazarett Matthaei in Lodz in 1915. Diss. Heidelberg 1895. From Pforzheim. Edited October 13, 2021 by webr55
Dave Danner
Stabsarzt d.L.a.D. Dr. Karl Julius Wilhelm Katz was born on 17.3.1869 in Pforzheim and died on 10.4.1944 in Karlsruhe. Saldern had the Finnish Cross of Liberty 2nd Class with Swords. He also had the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Kreuz für Auszeichnung im Kriege.
landsknechte
Interesting! On a lark, I checked Ancestry.com, and found a XXI. Armee-Korps ranklist that shows him in 1914 (I think) with only the BZ3bXmE listed at that point. He was posted in Lodz as a doctor, not there as a patient, correct? (My father in law was from Lodz, so that caught my eye.)
