Hello,

I study this excelent book, many informations there. But I have in my collection these two medals, which are nor included in the book. Can somebody explain?  Hanafy is not replying my mails.

These are the 1945 Malaria (silver) and 1948 Cholera (gilt) medals - official recognition for service during these two campaigns but not state awards to be worn. The should have a green or green and white ribbon with a small suspension brooch.

Is the Malaria medal actually silver or just silvered base metal? All the examples I have seen are gilded base metal although a gold example does exist in the Alexandria Jewellery Museum.

The gilt bronze medal is the 1945 King Farouk I Cholera Epidemic Medal and the white metal is the 1947 King Farouk I Malaria Eradication Medal. This Malaria Medal is shown in gilt bronze in the JOMSA citation below. Examples in gilt bronze also have enamel decorating parts of the superior crown suspension element. Of course I know these medals. I read your article in JOMSA Owain. But are we sure both medals were already officialy established? Isn't it possible that these medals are some kind of test samples? I sent email to Hanafy, but without any reaction. Do you have contact on him Rusty?

It took a while for Hanafy to respond to my initial inquiry. Expect it could be 2-3 weeks to hear back from him. 

 

Owain addresses the probability that at least one of the medals he has were test items that be obtained from Fahmy Tewfik Bichay in his JOMSA article. He can comment on your concern about the configuration of the official awards compared with a "few" circulating test examples.
