Can someone tell me if IR182 was active or reserve? If active, was there a RIR182?

Also, trying to research some of these Saxon Regiments during the war but I'm having a heck of a time determining which units were made up from extras of other units(extra is not the right word). I've read that the 123rd Division was made up from units from the 23rd, 24th, and 34th Divisions. Is it possible that men from the 100th regiment (LGR (100) WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE 182?

My wifes great grandfather was a Lt in the 182nd. He was wounded on the Somme with the regt before transferring to the 101, then later back to the 182.

Chris, that's very interesting. Do you know why he went to the 101 the later back to 182? Do ya have any photos?

    Just found this at http://www.1914-18.info/erster-weltkrieg.p...&start=1130

    Infanterie-Regiment Nr.182

    K?niglich S?chsisches 16. Infanterie-Regiment Nr.182

    (46.Inf.-Brig./23.Inf.-Div./XII. Armeek./3.Armee)

    (Standort: Freiberg)

    Kommandeur: Oberst Francke

According to 251 Division book IR182 was in:

    23 Division in 1914-1915 Belgium/Marne/Aisne

    123 Division in 1915 Champagne/Artois/Flanders/Somme

    216 Division in 1916 Galicia-Transylvania/Roumania

    212 Division in 1917-1918 Roumania/Ukraine

I guess it was an active regiment since no reference to reserve was mentioned. This regiment move around a bit. I read it took heavy casualyies in Roumania.

What are the chances of an NCO from IR100 transferring to IR182 in 1914-1915?

    Hi,

Nothing on the unit but his photo is here...

    http://www.kaiserscross.com/60401/90001.html

I think after he was wounded he went to a landsturm batln for a bit to recover, then to the 101 as a replacement.

I had misread, he did not return to the 182and in the end.

    It was 182

    hospital

    Landsturm batln to recover.

    182nd EB for 1 month

    then to the 101.

    Best

    Chris

    Chris, nice photos

I guess what I'm trying to find out is if officers and NCOs transferred to other regiments and if so are there records? Could an NCO from the 100 be transferred to RIR100 or RIR101 or RIR103 or IR182 or IR482 and so on??? What about transferring to Landwehr units?

Seeing the photos in Rick's ribbon bar section of Saxon NCOs wearing Litzen but in units not authorized to wear litzen confuses me. I guess the photos have writing on the reverse to identify the unit because its not evident in the photos. Would anyone have photos to share?

Another question. In my search I came across a division named the Franke Division. Does anyone know the history of this unit and what regiments or units made up this division?

    Charles,

The 182nd existed before the war, as it was established in 1912. The only records I know of that exist concerning an enlisted man's unit assignments are those kept in his Milit?rpa?/Soldbuch.

    Chris,

The first photo on your website shows your grandfather wearing a prewar Rock from a cyphered regiment and with Einj?hrige Freiwilliger cord. Somehow, this does not make sense with your timeline of his regimental affiliation.

    Hi Chip,

Do you have any photos in your collection of Saxons? I've been searching for all things 100 as you know but now I'm looking for history and photos of regiments 101, 103, 106, 182, and of coarse 100.

That confirms what I thought. The grandmother insists its her father... but he only joined in 1915.

I will dig out another pic where I am 100% sure its him

No name Feldwebel in KS IR 182 mit Frau und Moppet

What particularly pleases me is his combatant EK2 with Silver Friedrich August Medal on the peacetime ribbon with war merit Spange

Note that the "spectrum shift" has made the yellow and black striped ribbon look a solid dark color.

Another question. In my search I came across a division named the Franke Division. Does anyone know the history of this unit and what regiments or units made up this division?

Division Franke or Division Francke? Division Francke was an ad hoc Saxon division formed in July 1916 which fought in the Somme region until September 1916. It was formed around the 63. Infanterie-Brigade, commanded by Generalmajor Franz Francke, the commander of IR 182 in 1914, and included units drawn from the 23. Infanterie-Division and the 32. Infanterie-Division.

It was originally formed around LGR 100, IR 102, IR 103, and J?g.Btl.12. There is a three-page history of the division's combat in the Somme in Band 3 of "Sachsen in grosser Zeit".

    Some more organizational information: http://www.1914-18.info/erster-weltkrieg.p...ivision-Francke

Francke took command of the 212.?(Kgl. S?chs.) Infanterie-Division in September 1916 and later commanded the 23. (Kgl. S?chs.) Reserve-Division. He died on 2 January 1925. He had received the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry in 1914 as commander of IR 182 and received the Commander's Cross 2nd Class in October 1916 for his leadership of Division Francke.
