Eric Schena Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 (edited) Hi all:Reading the threads on Mongolian orders and the paucity of any kind of numerical range information on them, I thought I'd post this. On another forum, someone (vatjan, if anyone here is familiar with that thread) was keeping track of SN ranges for the different varieties of orders. Using his fantastic info, I've been trying to keep a running total myself in a spreadsheet. Since I think my methodology may be sufficiently different enough from vatjan's, as well as some of the numbers I have collected differ enough, and all the info was captured from data in the public domain, I thought I'd post this here to help in any ongoing number logging efforts. If anyone has any objection to this post, let me know and I'll remove it - last thing I want to be is an information thief.A couple of things:1. For the most part, I did not include the current orders. 2. My copy of Battushig is still in transit (really HUGE thank you to Christian L. for snagging me a copy ), so some of my variety identifications may be off a bit.3. I also did not take into account screwplate types.I hope this is vaguely useful. Gerd Becker Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Eric, fantastic info. Thanks so much for posting this list Gerd
Ed_Haynes Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Great stuff, Eric. Thanks. Let us see what we can add . . . .Maybe when we have dates on known serial numbers, more blankc can be filled in the gaping holes in our knowledge.
Guest Rick Research Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Yup, so far I think we only have Ed's and the two in my Orders Book:Sukhbator:#158 = 24 October 1957 (EH Group 1)#423 = 28 November 1962 (EH Group 1)Red Banner of Labor:#621 = 17 November 1951 (EH Group 1)Polar Star:#822 = 23 September 1936 (EH Group 1)#1,956 = 29 Novenber 1955 (yes, this and #2,705 ARE correctly if inexploicably dated) (EH Group 1)#2,705 = 8 Decmebr 1948 (yes, this and #1,956 ARE correctly if inexplicably dated) (EH Group 1)Military Merit Order:#1,049 = 1 October 1959 (RL Orders Book 1)Military Merit Medal:#5,228 = 24 July 1954 (RL Orders Book 1)
Ed_Haynes Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Add to Rick's list:Hero of Labor "Gold Soyombo" Medal (type 1) -- #52, 28 November 1962 (EH Group 1)
Ed_Haynes Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 (edited) Miscellaneous things:1- Those three tricky Polar Stars:#822 = 23 September 1936 (EH Group 1)As I read Battushig and reconcile it with Eric's list, this would have been Schena Type 1 (Battushig A31), the double red banner type, 1936-40.#1,956 = 29 Novenber 1955 (yes, this and #2,705 ARE correctly if inexploicably dated) (EH Group 1)As I read Battushig and reconcile it with Eric's list, this would have been Schena Type 3 (Battushig A32.2), with Cyrillic legend (1941-70).#2,705 = 8 Decmebr 1948 (yes, this and #1,956 ARE correctly if inexplicably dated) (EH Group 1)Same as above? Or was this a late Schena Type 2.2 award?! Battushig shows his A32.1 (Mongol legend) as 1940-41 and A32.2 (Cyrillic) as 1941-70, but . . .?Now, more than ever, I wish Suuigiyn Gombo's Polar Stars were still with his group! 2- My other (single) RBL (shown as http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2499&st=19 in the "Mongolian Awards" thread) is #484 and is Eric's Type 1.3- The numbering on my three Honorary Medal(s) of Labor:No. 550 (Schena Type 1, Battushig ??)3842 (Schena Type 1.2, Battushig A38.1)18531 (Schena 2.1, Battushig A38.2)Shown below. Vatjan Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) Hi guys,This is the info I have gathered over the last few years for mongolian award date-numbers.Please keep in mind that the Mongolians used a different calender from 1921 until +-1946.They started counting from their indepence from China, after the fall of the Qing Empire, in 1911.1911 was year 1, so if you find order booklets with entries for orders for the year 35, it is actually a 1945 award.First off the Order of the Polar Star:T1 185/1804 1936 Voroshilov, Kliment E., Marshal USSR (later n? a replacement?)T2 1225 6/09/1944 Jundendoo Ravdangijn 2265 3/11/1945 (T2 booklet)T3 88 6/07/1946 Zhamba Horloo 2946 8/07/1950 Zhamba Horloo 2506 30/12/1956 3079 16/01/1957 Zhamba Horloo 3917 30/12/1956 Gombogn, Gazhuur, received also Sukhe Bator # 470 6133 16/02/1956 Ajoum Sanzh 9013 14/12/1957 9138 14/07/1960 Jundendoo Ravdangijn 11611 00/03/1966 group 7 13376 1/12/1969 14236 3/07/1971 Mohndat Shadav 14718 12/03/1973 Sanj, GombojavT4 15860 3/07/1971 group 17 19735 1/12/1979 25483 3/04/1980 Surengin, Damdin 27017 3/07/1991 Damdin, Zurman 28321 18/04/1995 Nalmid, Daibalbar 31529 21/11/2001 Tumendemberel Namjil Edited November 10, 2005 by vatjan

Guest Rick Research Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Ohhhhhhhhhh yes! It is obvious that many awards which have been offered for sale as "World War Two" period are actually decades later. This sort of detailed, specific, and most important ACCURATE numbers-to-dates information is absolutely essential to our understanding of actual awards over time in Mongolia. We are MUCH obliged for all your research effort!
Ed_Haynes Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Wow!Thanks, Jan. Much to ponder . . . .(Wish I could persuade Dr. B to come on the forum!)

Guest Rick Research Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Wellll, you must agree that translating something as "Combat" when there was no combat and "War" when there was no war is not accurate. Just one of my personal translation crusades. I'm RIGHT about "Zasluga" versus "Sluzhba" for "Merit" versus "Service" in Russian mis-translations, after all, even if native speakers still insist on getting that WRONG! Polar Stars numbers are a MESS!!!!!!
