Being a gunner on that rig is not on my short list of dream jobs. ;)

Ditto that. A few of these have turned up in "relic" condition in Poland in the last few years, but none of them seemed like healthy places to have spent a few hot weeks. Rare and interesting document. Do you know where the Soldbuch holder served?

My uncle often told of the story of these Pillboxes in Italy. One was positioned just downhill from a ridge where advancing allied tanks were picked off 1 by 1. The entire ridge was littered with it's victims. He said they finally spotted and blasted it with direct fire. The resulting explosion threw the turret into the air and when it landed, the turret gun was sticking straight up in the air.

Wow ... that's rather eery Kurt. Unfortunately he passed away several years ago ... so I guess we will never know. You wouldnt know if those were Canadian Troops in the picture ... would you?

I'm almost certain he was transferred to the Western Front Operations before the battles up in Northern Italy. Is there any date afixed to this picture as well?

    Hello

It would be soldiers of the 1st. Canadian Army, and the period is August - September 1944.

ahh ... ok ... I'll have to do some digging to see if he was still in Italy then .... my gut says no.

Doug, awesome Soldbuch You got there. Very very rare !

But just to be correct - the entry does not say Panthersturm - it says Pantherturm which means nothing more as the turret of the Panther. Panther S turm would mean the storm of a Panther (which doesn't make real sense)

    Very interesting thread !

    Kind regards

    Robert

    I would say 3 or even 4.

The tank panther had a team of 5 men.

    1 driver, 1 commander, 1 radio operator and 2 gunners ( Richt- und Ladesch?tze)

Certainly we don't need a driver here. 2 gunners and a radio-operator and the commander. Maybe no commander if one of the gunners takes over his part.

    I dunno.

    Fascinating subject.
