This complete and fully documented group has already been discussed, over on the "Soviet and Eastern Bloc" forum, but, if DDR is indeed welcomed, I thought I might cross-reference it here:

Were you every able to find out more background through the Neues Deutschland archives? Are you collecting DDR medals or was this an opportunity you just couldn't pass up? Kevin

I have a general interest (sub-interest?) in labor awards of the broadly defined "socialist" world (and a few isolated intererest islands in DDR, to be shown later, over there). This group was in my interest zone and a nice opportunity, so it has come to live with me now.

It was the DDR equivalent of the Soviet Gold Star "Hero of Labor". Pretty high, yes. Numbers? I do not know, sorry. Wish I did.

I do not have one of these orders... yet. Are they made of gold like their Soviet counterparts?

these have virtually disappeared from the market. You could buy them quite cheap right after 1989, but i haven?t seen one for sale for quite a while.

Quite true, all of the other medals in your photo can be normally be found on ebay.de but I've not seen a Held der Arbeit in some time.

No, alas. The early ones (1954-72) were silver (900) gilt, with the later ones (1973-89) are delicately described by Bartel as "Buntmetall goldfarben"; I'd not have been so generous. No where near as sexy as their Soviet (or Bulgarian, beyond that I cannot say) siblings.

Still . . . i like 'em. Have another one, a singleton, which I'll post when I get it home to visit.
