Chris Boonzaier Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 I have just won this...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=290002972433Has anyone seen one before? Obviously worn... was this given to the Austrians they were serving with... or other regts of the Alpenkorps?it is from 1915, the time when the Austrians awarded the Alpenkorps the Edelweiss cap badge....
Claudio Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Hi Chris!I already saw that medal being sold at Hermann Historica Auction a couple of years ago. I don't know if this Austrian "Spange" is legit, though. The ribbons looks quite brand new for me. The combination is quite interesting. It looks to have the same ribbon, although yours is very faded.Ciao,Claudio
Stogieman Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 These Regimental Medals are quite collectable within a very narrow group. They are quite rare and it's nice to see two examples of this one!
Chris Boonzaier Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 This is however a different class. Most regt medals are for the 50th or 100th anniversary. This one is a wartime one given to the Austrians whe were fighting with the Alpenkorps. The Alpenkorps was being trained for mountain warfare by the Austrians at the time.Would love to find the exact criteria....
Stogieman Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Hi Chris, I don't know of any information available in print on these. We are truly in "uncharted waters" on these. There nay be some articles in the BDOS volumes, but you'll have to check that on your end.

Chris Boonzaier Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 I think Weitze has the wrong ribbon?
Chip Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Chris,I have seen one at least once before on Ebay. I think I might have printed out the results. If I can find it, I will post the information here.Chip
Chris Boonzaier Posted July 16, 2006 Author Posted July 16, 2006 Hi,I dont find this on his site anymore ?
landsknechte Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Hi,I dont find this on his site anymore ?I don't remember how old those photos are, but I've had them on my hard drive for some time now.
Mike Dwyer Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I think Weitze has the wrong ribbon? The medal also appears to be mounted backwards.
Chris Boonzaier Posted July 20, 2006 Author Posted July 20, 2006 Here are some shots now that it has arrived...
Stogieman Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Beautiful piece Chris! I can count on one hand the number of these I've seen offered in the last 10 years...
Willi Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Beautiful piece Chris! I can count on one hand the number of these I've seen offered in the last 10 years...One can see a lot of these medals still today especially in Bavaria.
Chris Boonzaier Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 One can see a lot of these medals still today especially in Bavaria.Hi,a lot is relative. I see lots of EK2s, KVKs etc. etc. But so far this is the first one of these I have conciously seen.Realistically speaking... how many commemoratives can one regt have given out, compared to an official state medal?
Chris Boonzaier Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 So... I have seen 1 more of these for sale without ribbon, have still to find any info on it, a glance through the leib regt history does not mention it...Any of the new blood in here seen anything about them?
MJC Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Well, I thought I had a good one, but I think I got the Ol' Bait and Switch. Cast repro, right?
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 30, 2007 Author Posted January 30, 2007 Maybe not,do you have better pics?
Stogieman Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi Michael, I think much better pictures/scans would be needed. but... it does look like some "classic" casting flaws/pock marks on the upper flat sections of the reverse.
MJC Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Thanks guys. This should be proof enough. I bought this off eBay from a "collector" in Austria who offered a pic of what appeared to be an original. This badge that was delivered is certainily not the same one offered on eBay. It was only 35 Euro and it is going back if my concerns are valid. If anyone has an original they are parting with, let me know. Thanks for the input.
MJC Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 3. Detail. Pics are poor but hopefully sufficient.
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Well, definately not the same quality.... but the question would arise.... is there really any need to fake this????Another question... was it only awarded to Austrians?
MJC Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Chris,You touched on the point that occurred to me, why bother. As much as I personally like the medal, an original that is, I can't imagine demand would justify the effort. The same "collector" has another currently available on ebay, so perhaps he is the metallurgist as well!
