The red and green Habel Rope is for the Officers academy:

I received this one from the officer in the next post, he received it after he graduated from the Military Officers academy:

Here you see the flap with button that held the end of the Habel on 2nd Lt. Mohammad's Uniform:

This is the same Habel that was used under the Saddam Regime:

    Paul R and Lorenzo,

I have been following your posts while waiting for my friend in Iraq to answer me about the different color of ropes.

First of all, habel is not the correct name for the cords. Habel means a rope that you pull or drag things with. The name of the cord which goes around the shoulder is Qardoon.

There are eighteen different shoulder cords that my friend knows of and here is the list. Some are still in use

    1- Infantry-red and green

2- Artillery- red and deep blue

3- Electrical and Mechanical Engineer-red and yellow

4- Military Transportation- red and brown

    5- Tank- red and gray

    6- Republican Guard-red

7- Military Police- white- still used

8- Air Defense- red and light blue

9- Civil Defense- red and white

10- Higher Officers Official Uniform-gilt (or yellow)

    11- 3rd Army (legion)-black and gilt

12- Military College Students-red- still used

13- Air Force College Students-light blue

    14- Police-black and olive

15- Traffic Police- white and deep blue, still used

16- Police MP (Control Units) - black

    17- Police-Nationality Department-black and white

    18-Police College Students-white

I hope this helps you out. I have a question on # 6 and # 12 both being red so will check into it a little farther.

Thanks Bob. The information you give is invaluable!!

I have heard of a solid green Qardoon. Any word on that one?

Is there a specific Qardoon for the military medical branch?

    Doc and Paul,

I had my friend do some checking on the qardoons. He asked another dealer about the medical department qardoons and he didn't think the medical department had one. As far as the green qardoon, my friend was told there isn't any specific rank that used the green color but this and other colors were used by detachments in the Military Training Centers to differentiate each detachment from one another. My friend is going to ask another one or two dealers to double check on this information and get back to me. That is all I have for now.
