Hi, in Ethiopia like in many parts of Africa, on the countryside it is traditional for men to carry a 1m stick, They are pretty handy.

So the pic of him wearing the EK2 predates WW1 by about a decade, I find it very interesting to see pics of higher ups who had loads of medals "dressing down" and just wearing the EK2. It seems to be a case of them attaching a certain value to it, or wanting to create a certain value for it amongst the public. best Chris

Hi, I am open to suggestions on this, according to the Wiki page, Quenzer died in 1918.... I still dont think they simply left a Q off of the stamp, would have been very unusual, and they only became an AG in the late 1920s, so it would not fit. I am in the dark on this one :-(

Hi, The Bavarian MVK seems to have been approved down at divisional level, inspite of the fact that it looks different on the document. There is another thing to take into account... something brought home to me while reading an autobiographical novel by a Prussian Artilleryman. He was wounded and landed up in a bavarian field hospital, all was well until the men in his room found out he was prussian... then they closed ranks on him and mobbed him to hell, ignoring him, even the orderlys stopped helping him, and the doctor was unfriendly... he managed to drop the line that he was born in Saxony and after a few days all was well... So... how did Bavarians like that see the EK? What did one think when he got a Prussian award and his buddy got a good old Bavarian one.

I am getting a doc signed by Oberstleutnant Ostertag, Chef des Stabes Etappen Kdo 4. Armee. Unfortunately without a date. It is important to be able to date this document and I was wondering if anyone knew just when he held that position? Major, later Oberstleutnant ernst Freund commanded the Landsturm batln I Essen in November 1914... Does anyone know where he went afterwards? Thanks Chris
