Hi, I just dug out my Bavarian Litewka. if the Litewka was worn with the Fieldgrey trousers, which Schirmmutze was worn with it? The regular blue, or the Fieldgrey? Thanks Chris

Hi Hi, I am not really a boards guy so I dont have a lot to compare, but my regular ones are 4.5mm, these are indeed quite a bit narrower at 3.8mm, however, the private purchase ones on my Bavarian Arty tunic are also narower than the issue ones, so I guess that must be a factor? The guy must have been pretty small, they are also shorter than issue boards.

Duh, My bad. I read the posts before going to sleep and asked the question while still in a wake up daze. I am guessing from the fine quality private purchase that these are probably pre war and not 1917-18?

Hi, Did they keep the Nicholas 2 Cypher after the outbreak of the war? I was pretty happy with the find although they are not really my bad. The stitching quality is fantastic. Chris

I could not resist these. They are private purchase, but the quality is just really nice.

Of course, maybe he lost his EK1 in 1923 and picked up another one, Or GIs stole it in 1945 and he got another one.... Or, like the rest of an intact group this was the Cross awarded to Hautpmann Lempelius in Riga in September 1917. I tend to think it is. I did not get the whole group, but got all the important parts :-)

Hi, I think it may be for the ZARP, or transvaal police. Some time ago I would have grabbed it with both hands. I have never seen one before. As my collecting field has changed I will pass. Best Chris

Indeed, he has some nice land. Ers batl I.R.31, II. Batl from Ers Bat I.R.85 and III. Batl from Ers. Bat I.R.84... and Lempelius took over this III Batl. best Chris

Hi Andy, Thanks! That Is an important piece of the puzzle and helps with the connection to the IR410 I think? He was with the II Batl. which was from the 2. Ers. Batl, I.R.84, which probably fed the Landwehr 84 as well?

Hi, Lempelius served as a one year volunteer in 1898 or so in Füs Regt 86. He got his Landwehr Dienstauszeichnung as Lt d. Res in the regiment in 1910. In 1917 he was in the III Batl. Infanterie regiment 410. Does anyone have any idea where he was in 1914-1916? I gues I.R. 84, 85 or Füs. Regt 86. Thanks Chris

Me meant the British Compasses are better, BUT unfortunately swing for ever... Here is a prewar Verner compass. They are fantastic pieces.

The Brits had fantastic compases, i have a few WW1 and earlier ones that are just as good today as they were back when. The German compases seem to settle much faster, the brit ones, although better, swing backwards and forwards for ages!!
