    1. Hi, is there any impression on the inside? 15cm seems to be way big for a compass pouch. by 1922 there were standard compasses with their own pouches. Maybe for a weapon part of some sort? Or revolver ammo? I will check my WW1 uniforms and equip book tonight. Best Chris
    2. For some reason when they are horizontal I get the automatic uge to turn my head on the side... Maybe with vertical boards can be resized to fit the screen? Should be more than big enough....
    3. I think the price of trousers does not reflect the extreme rarity. There are many more people in the market for jackets than trousers so the jacket prices are proportionally (proportional to their rarity) higher compared to the trousers... Added to that, trousers are easily worn in post war situations, at work, on the farm etc... while many jackets just hung in the cupboard. I long ago gave up looking for a pair.... it is a tiny needle in a very large haystack....
    4. Lets see shoulder boards in all shapes and forms! Best would be a scan on a white background, front and back. Anyone posting a board is agreeing that they may be used in a database (if we get enough to justify one). Officers, other ranks, pre war, wartime, etc. etc. etc.... lets see them!
    5. I assume transport for the field hospital and then transport for the Luftschiffer.
    6. I dont think it is a compass case. Maybe no broad arrow, but surely private purchase usually would not have IA and date? Is the ruler in inches or cm ?
    7. Is there a small chance that anyone out there has French maps showing the changes in the last days of July until about 10th of August in the area between Fleury and the haie Renard? Thanks Chris
    8. Is Bezirksfeldwebel a rank or a position? Same way in the French army each company has a "Duty sergeant" and Duty caporal", but the function of Duty Sgt can be fulfilled by a Caporal-Chef and a PFC on occasion can stand as Duty Caporal.
    9. Hi, Am I correct in assuming that the top one is issue, the bottom one private purchase? Thanks Chris
    10. I have no clue about shoulder boards as some of you may have noticed :-( I dont know if these are pre war or wartime... Out of the woodwork today.... I assume both infantry? BIR9 or BRIR9 Garde Gren 6 ? Thanks Chris
    11. Hass says the bars of this style are WW1 and later and mentions the "Corn"1"Corn" (Like this one) And "Corn"1"Corn" "Corn"2"Corn" "Corn"(Backward)2"Corn" "Corn"1*"Corn" "Corn"BR He mentions tha last series (Especially the 1* stamped ones are basically for the collectors market. Is it possible to date the stamps? Best Chris
    12. This is of course a retroactive award... Question is... the 8eme Chasseur spent a long time in Algeria in the 1840s, then a year from 1875-76 (When nothing was going on) Was the Algeria bar handed out all the time, or just during periods of combat? Is there a list that goes into this in detail? If this is from the 1840s, a lot of research potential... in the 1875 period a bit of a dead end...
    13. And a last one...
    14. One to the same guy, awarded for the fighting at Fleury in early August 1916
    15. This is at Armee level, all hand written, but does not indicate at which level the document was written and signes (there is no stamp and signature is not identified) Any gut feeling if the Armee or Regt did this?
    16. The medal has a fantastic quality, the engraver and the maker were fantastic.
    17. It fits with this superb article by Walter Nuhn http://www.kaiserscross.com/41815/205801.html
    18. This is obscure, but just incase its of use to anyone, a list of the German casualties in the Gibeon area. I have a zerox from the South African military archives which I had made while down there. It was typed up by an army clerk in 1915, so there are errors in names and ranks, but a bit of the historical puzzle all the same.... Interesting to see some South African Names in there... must have been Boers who settled in GSWA Casualties German forces: Gibeon, 26th-27th April 1915 Killed Ernst Holger (4th Coy), Peter Rehbein, Kneil (1st Res), Emil Franke, Franze Renner, Sergt. 19. Hmmmm... I think that is wrong and needs to be set straight. French, Like post WW1 German awards were not only given on paper. You get a paper AND a medal, and can if you want buy more. SOME French medals (and these are few, mostly civilian or for past service) are self bought. You get a certificate of status, and this status allows you to wear a certain medal, which you have to buy. I don't think this is true for serving military though. There ARE official manufacturers for many of the medals and ONLY they are allowed to produce them. Some medals have had exclusively one producer since the 1920s..... A handful of medals have numerous makers. Best Chris
    20. Wow! I never knew Para wings existed! The parachute seems to have strong South African influence?
    21. Sometime ago at Frankfurt Airport I helped an older couple to find their way to their gate. I saw from his ticket that his name was Cordt von Brandis and joked if he was sure he wanted the flight to Stockholm, or was storming Douaumont his real objective. The old guy did a double take then chuckled and said i was the first person in 40 years to make the connection. The last other person had been his company commander during his army time. He spoke for a few moments about the PLM and I kinda changed the subject as I did not want to tell him what we know today... his knowledge was based on his great uncles book...
