    1. Just came across this thread and thought I would add this scan of page one of a four page letter from a crew member of HMS Hood written in 1923. As can be seen the paper is headed HMS Hood c/o GPO London which ties in with the inscription on the pencil. Again I wonder if this paper was issued or available for purchase aboard the ship?
    2. Rick, the wooden truncheon I was issued with was always carried out of sight in an internal pocket sewn into the leg of the Police issue trousers. A leather or canvas strap was fixed to the top of the truncheon by being looped around a recess in the wood and then either sewn tight or rivetted into place.
    3. Thanks Will. You see a lot of truncheons around and identification is always a problem I find.
    4. Just a quick question, does this truncheon have any unit markings or is it a specific pattern used by the Cape Mounted Police?
    5. Another historical police helmet for this thread. Although a Queens crown example the old West Sussex Constabulary was amalgamated when Sussex Police was formed and so these are becoming harder to find.
    6. A Queens Own Cameron Highlanders postcard from my archives which I believe to be pre Great War period.
    7. Leigh, thanks for posting this and thanks for the detail regarding the Normandy photo. As you stated it is a well known and often published image and nice to get some first hand information about it.
    8. Merv, a little off subject here but I thought this item would link in well. A World War 2 issued Special Constables armband for the Kent County Constabulary which I had until recently in my collection. This armband is manufactured from a waxed parchment type material with a flimsy black elastic and metal hook fixing. I would imagine that as with the Great War era there was a sudden need for extra Policing and this armband would have been a cheap way to 'uniform' volunteers. The blue ink stamp has sadly faded but shows it was issued by the Deputy Chief Constables Office of Kent County Constabularly in 1941.
    9. Rick. In regard to those issued to serving members of Surrey Police with over five years service as mine was, they were issued unamed.
    10. I know this will get silly But I got one aswell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    11. Another view of the Saxon in post 21 for IR134. I can't make out his shoulder board numbers I'm afraid.
    12. A new HJ related photo from my collection, Marine Hitler Youth at summer camp 1936.
    13. I would like to thank new member John Callcut for this newspaper obituary photograph of C T Hills, the subject of this post. Welcome to this excellent forum John and good luck with your research.
    14. Postally unused I'm afraid I'll take your advice and scan each individual and see what I come up with.
    15. Another close up. Of note is the fact that both the one button and two button pocket white drillich uniforms are being worn.
    16. A new arrival from Germany is this unit photograph. The rear of this postcard sized image bears a printed photographers stamp from the town of Belzig which I believe is in the Brandenburg area of Germany.
    17. I would agree with everything said regarding the use of warm water and a soft brush. The other thing I have always done is a to dry the washed area immediately after with the other halfs hair dryer on its lowest setting. The dry heat gets everywhere and ensures there is no water left in any of the medal detail.
    18. Sorry Theodor, must be going blind, I've just realized you have put 1937.
    19. Theodor, again superb photos, thanks for showing them. In your photo in post 39 the aircraft has the Military Order for Bravery painted on the fuselage. Is there a date on the photo, it was my understanding that this marking was replaced pre war to the black saltire on a white square background?
