I know that I've seen that hybrid device somewhere in the past, almost certainly on a ribbon bar. Unfortunately I didn't bother to save the photograph, as I wrote it off as a fantasy piece. --Chris
I've had pretty good luck with his bars thus far, but I've always been very careful. Unless they've got very authentic looking wear (such as this one), I generally don't even bother. The pretty mint bars - forget it. Thanks, --Chris
I'm afraid that I don't have access to a better photograph of this one, but from the image posted - does anyone have any clue what this Prince Alfons thing-a-ma-bob might be? --Chris
Nothing bolsters the cause of the global march of communism like some good old fashioned capitalism! Of course, now I absolutely have to find a Red Army coffee mug to have with me at the office. --Chris
Out of curiosity, if you could wave a magic wand and learn the identity / background / story / etc. of the original recipient of any one of your items - what would it be? --Chris
I'd be interested to see if there are any pinbacks from the other two versions (combatants and non-combatants) of the crosses floating around out there. --Chris
I know the ribbon in first place is something Weimar-era from W?rttemberg, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Does anyone remember what that ribbon represents, and possibly have a picture of the decoration? Thanks, --Chris
Lock it all way in a safe for a few years (it's not like this stuff depreciates over time) until most people would have forgotten about it, and then part it out bits at a time under different aliases and in different places. If it wasn't stolen "to order"...
Are there any confirmed examples of devices being painted by the tailors that put but ribbon bars together? I have no doubt that device was painted (plating doesn't leave brush marks), and that the painting was done after the device was attached to the bar (trace amounts of silver paint on the ribbon).
