    1. Thanks a lot for that Rick, of course I was forgetting that border control from the frontiers of "greater" germany would probably have met with little work on many of the areas they bordered with! I was still very happy to get this little 3 ribbon bar for a reasonable ?24. I love some of our small local shows, you never know whats going to pop out of a case. I think this same guy had a nice little Polizei mini on a 2 ribbon bar, but I forgot about it. No RAD minis though Regards Matt Gibbs
    2. I did kind of wonder but have noted a 4 bar which included these 3 and 1 other. Nice to be reminded of others that were button worn awards and other membership badges etc. The guys uniform would indeed not look bare if he had this, the KVKII button, NSDAP membership badge, HJ golden honour badge etc Regards Matt Gibbs
    3. Don't have this number either. Not Gau westfalen nor in the dienstaltersliste pages I have either Regards Matt Gibbs
    4. Hey ho folks. Just checking in with more info on this bar, I have the local history archive where this recipient was living looking for his photo with medal bar, one of them has seen it somewhere. He was a Kreisleiter and Gauinspektor and later a Landrat in Gau Westfalen. [Honorary SS leader as well] From his record as sent to me by them all the awards and the WW1 service check out. All his effects were sold through a German dealer including his unform, would have liked to see that. I have 3 nice photos of him, one with an older bar, which preceeds this and does not have all the awards on it! Thanks also to 2 collectors who as Uk based, one as a member, here have seen this piece and were happy with it - all the emblems are untouched and there is no issues with blacklight. Main thing about all this is all the info I have learned about researching the older party faithful! Very interesting stuff. Kind regards and best wishes Matt Gibbs
    5. You all know that I am ever so grateful for the freely shared info, don'tcha..? Many thanks. Always great tidbits of info to learn. Nice to pin down those dates, I love it when that kind of info is available, logical and simple. Something just said buy me, and as it was not expensive I thought, hey why not. Many thanks Matt Gibbs
    6. Ahh Customs! Of course, I didn't think to look at full sized medals. Is that 20 yrs or something? Shall have to check it out and add it up. Many thanks Matt Gibbs
    7. [attachmentid=54652]Hello folks saw this device at a fair and made a chance purchase. The back is a nice period but cheaply plated bar, sadly the pin is rusted and the plating is lifting slightly in a couple of places. Fronts nicely line up and looks untampered with. regards Matt Gibbs
    8. Just a thought/question about bars and their making. If you had a really nice ribbon bar and recieved a new decoration would you extend the existing one or keep the old and buy a new complete one? I just wondered as I was looking at these. How about if a bar is made up post war for a vet out of old stock but genuine items. I assume the value is lesser even though the items are genuine. Just thinking about this because of a couple of Brit medals I bought recently, 1908 India General Service medals, nicely named etc, but with new ribbons. I don't think I could have haggled the price down because the ribbon was new. I have seen loads of bars in museums where the ribbons are replaced because they have been rubbed, dirty or worn. Is this important or is the medal hanging from it the actual important thing. I don't devalue a friends DFC group because it has new ribbons. Regards Matt Gibbs
    9. Yum Love these political badges, however I think for some personal reason, the Osthannover badge is the least striking, dunno why, I just don't like it! How about the large wreathed 1923 badge used by many Gaus? Love that one! And the Wartheland - hmmmmmmm Regards Matt Gibbs
    10. Robin, I agree that you need to know what some of our master UK spin doctors can achieve before discounting Goebbels job description in this line of work, he was perhaps THE master at it, for all the reasons others have placed, always thinking before speaking or giving an opinion, always promoting the good of a situation by explaining that it could only have been possible because of the "miracle" of National Socialism etc etc. If you detached the obvious negative of being associated with the Nazis and transposed someone with his qualities of ruthlessness in another european country I think he would still have had the same ruthless attitude to whatever cause he believed in. Not stating my case very well, but I know what I mean! Regards Matt Gibbs
    11. Hello there Thanks for those who read the post, I have now found out that it is correct Thanks to the RAF re-enacting group who were at the Victory Show this year.
    12. When I unpack from the house move I will post the pic, it was in a German medal publication. This would indeed have been naughty It almost seems that the rarity is to find a long bar which is something like 100% as per regulations or is that maybe just my imagination. LOL Regards Matt Gibbs
    13. Hello there I am trying to check something I believe to be correct. Was it allowed for Army personnel in WW2 to wear RFC wings if they had been pilot officers in WW1? Would they wear the RFC wing or the RAF equivalent, even though they were not acting as a pilot. I have been told this was allowed subject to confirmation of qualifications and permission from C/O's. regards Matt Gibbs
    14. Formed in 1915. Moved out to Palestine Inter War yrs. By the start of World War II No. 14 squadron was flying Wellesley bombers. With the expected advance of Axis forces through Africa, the Squadron began bombing targets in Eritrea in June 1940 before re-equipping with Blenheims and a flight of Gladiators by the end of that year. These were used until the summer of 1942 when Marauders were taken on strength and used in the anti-shipping role. During mid-1944, the Squadron moved to Chivenor and flew Wellingtons in the anti-submarine role. This continued until June 1945, when the Squadron moved to Banff in Scotland and traded its Wellingtons for Mosquitos. They had Battle Honours for the Med 1941-43, Egypt and Libya 191-42 and Sicily 1943. Hope this gives you an idea where they were.
    15. The Royal Air Force (RAF) MSM was introduced in June 1918. Made of silver, and 36 millimetres in diameter the medal has the profile of the sovereign on the obverse and the reverse side has a crown and wreath around the words "For Meritorious Service". The recipient's details are shown on the medal's rim. The medal's ribbon is crimson and light blue, with white stripes at both edges and down the centre. You should thereofre find his service number, which would allow more research to take place. The medal was intended to recognise service on the ground. It was replaced by the BEM in 1928. I have no idea how many were awarded, nice little medal group I should think. Regards Matt Gibbs
    16. Dan All my stuff is packed due to almost immediate house move in 2 days but you can, I think get the Patzwall book from Weitze or Amazon websites. Regards and best wishes Matt Gibbs
    17. IF there were to be no foreign or enemy awards how do you account for the uniform photo I saw last year in a german ppublication showing a photo taken about 1942 of a major in army uniform [driving a desk] wearing the King Edward 7th Africa general service medal [a specific incident relating to assistance of german troops helping brit troops fighting natives] at the end of his ribbon bar? Yes I jest not, a WW2 photo of ribbon bar with a British award on the end. Regards Matt Gibbs
    18. They had interesting family ties to royalty too. Princess Karolina Reuss a descendant of King Heinrich I von Weida by King Heinrich 5th of Reuss married Graf Karl von P?ckler-Burghauss, Freiherr von Groditz, son of Graf Erdmann von P?ckler, Freiherr von Groditz and Gr?fin Anna von Maltzan, Freiin zu Wartenberg und Penzlin Born 9 July 1817 in Tannhausen and Died 1 July 1899. Bet its the same family somewhere along the line as you say. As for WW2 ancestors there was a Puckler-Burghauss who was an SS General. He's buried in Brno. I wonder if P?ckler Freiherr v.Groditz, Hermann Graf v., geboren 1798, General und Oberstallmeister was his father? Interesting family! Regards Matt Gibbs
    19. Any more info on the book. Everytime I see another post on the thread on the AHF about the RK KVK winners I wonder about this work coming out! Regards Matt Gibbs
    20. How many other montenegrin awards are they, is this the same one as gazetted? regards MGibbs
    21. Whoops, Forgot to add, contact this guy, if you have not already: http://www.militariaresearch.com/ one if his specialties seems to be gold party badge numbers, Regards Matt Gibbs
    22. Well, I can' say who he was, but he wasn't in Gau Westfalen because I have all the numbers for this Gau, I went through them, just on the off chance, but this number doesn't match any names, neither any of the couple of hundred of SS or Polizei names, sorry! Hope you get there one day. Regards Matt Gibbs
    23. GPPG; nice.....really....nice! Where the heck do you find those minis! Regards Matt Gibbs
    24. Forgive me, I just noticed this - GAU BERLIN MINI???? Ok, Gau Berlin Mini, on a chain...? WITH 2 long service crosses as well..? Is this fair..? Is it right..? Some day I really need to make that visit Chris. Regards Matt Gibbs
    25. Interesting question I too have often wondered this. I guessed that it was partly mythological, and part based on the auxilliary cruisers whole raison d-etre. The Vikings used multi-purpose boats, they would use it for fishing and trade as much as exploration and transport, policing their waters and expansion by conquest. I guess the idea of the auxiliary cruiser and its purpose maybe was what inspired this design in the mind of the designer? I must admit I don't really collect navy interest material but I have always liked this badge. If I had to have one naval badge I would have a minty Schwerin Auxiliary Cruisers badge. Hey, if we're going for the whole fantasy collection thing make it "with diamonds". Fab design Regards Matt Gibbs
