Kriegsmarine Narvik
Peter BL replied to nesredep's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Peter....as Pascal says, there's no absolute proof that certain Narvik shields can be attributed to certain makers. No need to stand corrected (you may well have called it right). A really great thread ......Peter -
Kriegsmarine Narvik
Peter BL replied to nesredep's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
That's one of my other shields Peter....... . I still maintain the Cupal shield shown is thought to be attributed to Junker. Maybe when Pascal's book comes out we'll know more. all the best........Peter -

Kriegsmarine Narvik
Peter BL replied to nesredep's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Peter...you may well be correct regarding the Junker shield...I think this type is still unknown. Below a couple of Deumer shields. The Army backed zinc is an early version, The KM version is a later version with the 'filled in area' between the shoulders. N....if you look at the '4' in 1940 on the shield I posted and on your shield, you'll see the '4' is smaller the the '0' . Also under a loupe the quality of the detail is poor. All the best.........Peter. -
Kriegsmarine Narvik

Hi....just thought I'd post a better scan of the Small '4' Fake. Nesderep's Narvik is certainly that type and not original. Chris, that's a superb shield....not a Deumer but certainly original. As of this moment an 'unknown maker' but thought to be Junker. Hope that helps.........Peter -
Thanks Eric....incidentally a bit of info I got with the Award Doc.... ' Kurt Kratzig, NCO Engineer, Navy MGB unit. Kurland cufftitle, 13-5-45. signed by the CO of the 5th S.Flott, Lt Comm Herman Holzapfel. The 5 S.Flott was Jan-April 45 based in the Netherlands (Den Helder) and carried out raids in the English Channel (Thames and Humber area). April 45 the unit was transferred to the Baltic (Bornholm, Libau). 8/9-5-45 the unit evacuated military personnel from Courland to the west. Mid-May 45 the boats sailed to Murwik and Flensberg, where they surrendered.' All the best........Peter

Stalingrad Pendant
Peter BL replied to PKeating's topic in Germany: Third Reich: State, Civil, NSDAP Awards & Decorations
That's interesting to know PK.....I guess the fantasy shield I pointed too took this piece as it's design. Peter -
Stalingrad Pendant
Peter BL replied to PKeating's topic in Germany: Third Reich: State, Civil, NSDAP Awards & Decorations
It looks like the centre design of the Stalingrad shield (a fantasy shield ) produced in England in the late 70's. Check out the WAF Campaign shield index. KR......Peter -

Heer The Duenkirchen Shield
Peter BL replied to Peter BL's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Thanks for the on this shield.....I bought the piece about 3 years ago as an original but didn't realise how rare the Dunkirk shield was. Now all I need is the Award doc..... KR..........Peter -
Heer The Duenkirchen Shield
Peter BL replied to Peter BL's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Thanks for that Gordon.....you're right of course, these weren't campaign shields but it's suggested these were awarded to soldiers who took part in operation Blucher (disrupting Allied ops), that could explain why so few were awarded......incidentally,the quote from the Robin Lumsden book, that these awards were made from sheet copper is inaccurate as they were made from locally sourced thin brass. I guess that just leaves the question whether this award is original....... -
Heer The Duenkirchen Shield
Peter BL replied to Peter BL's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
It's a rare one alright Kevin, but in 4 years collecting campaign shields, I've never encountered another one of these. As for the number awarded....no-one really knows for sure but estimates are between 50 and a 100. Peter -
Heer The Duenkirchen Shield
Peter BL replied to Peter BL's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Hi Paul, thanks for the post......The Dunkirk shield was definately not a fantasy piece and was indeed authorised by the Commanding office vice-Admiral Frisius...... Entries in Solbuchs have been found and award docs are known to exist, although rare. KR.........Peter -
Heer My First Heer Krimschild
Peter BL replied to Avitas's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
Hi Pat...yes the shields posted are by an unknown maker but original. The best way I've found of comparing shields is the shape of the numbers in the date and looking at the coastlines around the shield and of course the eagles head which differs on each makers shield. KR............Peter -
