    1. Christian, Sorry to be late about answers to the quiz, but just came back from London today... I have never said it was a "public" ceremony. I just said these awards were given in official circumstances, by very high rank personalities from both sides. Indeed, these awards have been given in 2 different ceremonies . Cheers. Ch.
    2. Ed, Many thanks for the infos. I remember now these operations in the news... Cheers. Ch.
    3. Ed, Could you tell us more about this "Operation Black Thunder", and show us the reverse of the medal ? Seems more than interesting... Ch.
    4. I've got an answer from Marc. The point is that he changed of hosting company ("h?bergeur"), and his former one makes him difficulties about his name of domain (to make it short...). He is currently actively working to solve the issue, and all should be OK in a week time. Cheers. Ch.
    5. Nice Order of the Red Banner for Military Valor in the background... Ch.
    6. Thanks to a Member of this Forum, I have been able to send an e-mail to Marc Champenois. Just wait for his answer, now... Ch.
    7. The excellent and fabulous site of Marc Champenois, France-Phaleristique.com, dedicated to all French awards, seems out of service since several days now. Impossible for me to connect there. Do you share the same pb ? If yes, has some of you an e-mail to contact Marc Champenois, for him to check what is going wrong... ? The site address : www.france-phaleristique.com Thanks for your help. Ch.
    8. Good questions and points, Christian. May I precise the question ? Here, what do we understand as a spy ? 1. These two persons have exerced their "spying" activities for both sides, for the benefit of USSR and USA. In fact they were what we call in French "agents doubles". 2. They "spied" for both sides at the same time, during the same period. 3. their awards, both from USSR and USA, have been awarded precisely for their "spying" activities, for nothing else. This excludes persons as Putin, who "spied" for one side, and got "honorific" awards only from the other side, as a head of state. It excludes also people who changed their camp (ex-KGB officers), with long service awards (or other awards) for past activities. We are talking about awards related to the "spying" activities. We are not talking about the 2 East-German HSUs. We are not talking here about awards given during a ceremony in a "save flat", but of awards given in official circumstances, by high personalities of both sides. I hope this is clarified enough to allow you to begin your hunt . Let's see now what you will all find. I remind the questions, with the precision it is "as spies" that they have been decorated : Only two spies have ever been decorated (as spies) by both the Soviet Union and the United States. 1. Who are they ? 2. What awards did they receive, and when ? 3. For what actions, from both sides ? Good hunt. Ch.
    9. What is interesting in this pic is that the orders and medals are mounted in the spanish style. Ch.
    10. Kevin, This is the Order of Courage of Russian Federation, instituted on 2 March 1994. It is awarded in one class to the civilian and military for deeds of courage and self-sacrifice while saving life, protecting public order, fighting crime, fire, flood, etc., as well as for acts of bravery in military or civilian service. The order roughly corresponds to the Soviet Red Star Order and the Order for Personal Courage. Ch.
    11. Yes Ed. Even for orders not rare, they now display museum copies. Look at this pic taken in the Museum of Contemporary Soviet History (Former Central Museum of the October Revolution). Ch. Pic : ? Christophe ? ChR Collection
    12. Bryan, These look like museum copies. Same for the HSUs. BTW, look at the suspensions of the Lenin : the two on the left don't seem to have the same size as the two on the right... Curious... Ch.
    13. So, until now, no one really started collecting Soviet Awards during the Soviet area ? None of us succeeded in getting Soviet awards in their collection before the end of the Soviet Union ? More comments to come ? Ch.
    14. April 2001, he becomes Grand Officier de la L?gion d'Honneur. Ch. Pic : Meigneux / Sipa
    15. Another post-War pic. More ribbons. Same question for the 2nd and 3rd rows. Ch.
