      More than half century later they decided that it`s time to make 6th class more recognisable So they shortened some of its rays

      No. Only for 6th class. You see, originally 4th, 5th and 6th classes had same configuration of rays and same ribbons. They can be distinguished only by gold gilt. Not an easy task! Especially when patina kick in So in 1886 they decided to add rosette to the ribbon of 4th class to make it more recognisable.
