Netherlands Dutch Medals and Medalbars
Herman replied to Yankee's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Hi Brett, Dutch military personel who fought in the British Forces in WW2 were awarded British campaignmedals. These were not allowed by the Dutch Government for wearing because the Dutch Government instituted the War Remembrance Cross with clasps for WW2. (the second from the left in the group, with the green orange ribbon). No double decorating was allowed by the Dutch authorities. Nowadays however double decorating is normal. If a Dutch soldier serves for 6 months with a UN force he (or she) receives 2 medals; a Dutch one and an UN one. Herman -

Thabks Rob for your comment. I took some pictures. The first picture shows above type 1 at the right. Left is an US VM type 2. A closer look at the wire loop. Detail of the obverse with the FRASER mark. and as last picture of my type 1 and a type 2 together. regards Herman The last picture shows the type 1 at the right side. At the left side is a type 2. -
This is an issued TMPT cross after 25 succesfull participations. Please note the arms are painted instead of enamelled.,,,,,, cost efficiency?!?

British Victory Medals

Okay, thanks for the info. I own two VMs with a MiD emblem, both sold to me as originals, but the laurels differ from each other. I bought two different known repro emblems and guess what... now i have four slightly different emblems. I'm stumped. regards Herman -
Yup, 100 % okay.

Is this a repro MiD emblem i see on the VM? -
As the cross is also the logo of the Dutch Reserve Officers Association (KVNRO) they own this cross and its form. So, in the 1960-ties the National Board of this association decided to award this cross to people who were worthy to be merited by the board. This meant that now and then an important general in the eyes of the association or a very busy reserve officer received this cross. As you can see at the picture it is very close to the ten participations cross. The only difference is the closed laurel added to the ribbon. Please note that you did NOT have to do the physical TMPT to receive this cross. Herman

I never saw a gold one before, full size or mini. And i have seen a lot as a Dutchman. The medal was instituted in 1980 and given to a few (less than 10) US former military. They participated in the resistance as a special agent like Jedburgh or so. This medal was officially in silver, so the goldwash was privately done. Regards Herman

Maxblue. You're right. Between european countries the crowns differ. With Dutch orders, and i have seen a lot, i never saw significant differences. The Dutch medal collectors all search for the marks. Did you check the cross on top of the crown or the edge of the medal at the 12 o'clock position? Regards Herman

Relatives of KIAs can still order engraved medals from the government as replacements. Offcourse they are of current issue.

Yup. Not many, but occasionally. Some old ones were reribbonned and found their way to Vietnam WIAs and KIAs (engraved to the family). Regards Herman
