Well, here we go. As some of you may know I just got the Bawden Mongolian-English dictionary, and I've started trying to identify and translate some of the mystery documents we have here. I think I should start with a disclaimer: Mongolian is tricky, I know very little about the grammar and trying to translate with just a dictionary just isn't good enough. Still gonna try though! Once I figured out the words I put them in an order that would make sense in English. They do not correspond exactly to the words that they are written above. If desired I will post what each word means exactly but for now I hope this will do. I decided to start with Ed's mystery document #7 and work my way back. Any corrections or additions are more than welcome! JC

Here they are. I've gone trough my dictionary to see if any of the abbreviations are listed but no luck yet. JC

Just got two more in that haven't been posted, I'll get them up today! JC

Mongolia Gentlemen please check your screwplates!
fjcp replied to fjcp's topic in People's Republic Mongolia
Very impressive eric!!! The funny thing is I had one of those sitting no more than 3 feet away from me! They match perfectly! Although the sword handle on the screwback is a little "fatter" than the one on the medal, but none the less it's a match. Great work, but now the question is why?? JC -
That's the very reason it has taken me so long to get one!! I wasn't willing to spend between $400 and $500 to get one from the sellers on ABEbooks, so one day I type in "Mongolian Dictionary" on ebay and there it was. For almost the entire time I was the high bidder at $12, but then in the last few minutes it shot up to a stratospheric $45.60+ $7.00 shipping and it was mine! I guess Ebay isn't all bad! cheers JC

Well, I finally got me a copy of the Bawden Mongolian dictionary. It has 26500 main entries and many more subsidiary entries which is a lot more than the online sources have, not to mention it's easy to use, again unlike the online sources. I'm going to get started with some of the documents I have, and I'll also take a look at the mystery document thread to see if I can clear a few things up there too. Anyway I just got it in, but if anybody has any requests I'd be glad to help. Cheers JC

Mongolia Interior Ministry, document stamp 1938!
fjcp replied to fjcp's topic in People's Republic Mongolia
I bought an easy to clean off ink, so that none of it would dry and stick to the stamp. The problem is that the ink is far too liquid, so it doesn't coat the stamp evenly, and the result is the blotching you see in the pictures. I'm going to find a more viscous ink and I'll try it again, hopefully with better results! JC -

Mongolia Interior Ministry, document stamp 1938!

Here is a little gem I picked up a little while back and I am almost more excited about this stamp, than many of the orders and medals I've collected. It is, assuming I'm right (and the seller), a Document stamp from the Interior ministry , dated 1938. We've all seen these sort of stamps in the numerous documents shown here, although none match up with this one exactly. Trust me I've looked!! The style however should be very familiar to all. I've been trying to translate the Uighur, but it has been a bit tricky up to now, but I did manage to figure a few things out. (I'll get more once my dictionary gets here) The word on the top right of the stamp (top left on the paper) is the same as that on the left side of the Interior defence badge (D 01). Anyway over the comming days (weeks more likely) I'll try to get a more complete translation but for now enjoy the pictures and please let me know what you guys think! Thanks JC PS. the Uighur on the side clearly reads: 28 year, dating it at 1938.

Mongolia Gentlemen please check your screwplates!
fjcp replied to fjcp's topic in People's Republic Mongolia
Great stuff! It would be great if this little mystery could be solved, or at least cleared up a little! If I had only found this on one of the screwplates I might have just dismissed it, but two near identical ones suggest something more! I took some better pictures, hope this helps. The first picture is of the lower serial# PS! JC -
Mongolia Gentlemen please check your screwplates!
fjcp replied to fjcp's topic in People's Republic Mongolia
Thanks for checking you guys! I think the only likely suspects are the big orders, from the SB down to the Polar star, sine these all have the same type(s) of screwplates. I've checked all my orders and only the polarstars had these markings. I'm going to try to get better pictures of the marks with my camera, since my scanner doesn't like 3D objects that much! JC ps. My brother checked his Soviet screwplates from the nevsky etc. and none of these had the marks in question either. pps. Ed, I'm glad you don't find it silly! -
First let me say, thank you! to those of you who still contribute to the Mongolian forum, I realize it's been a bit quiet around here, but new topics are hard to find and this one may rank rather high on the "Sillymeter", but I found it interesting all the same! I just got in a low serial# Polar star (type 3 #583) and something caught my eye. On the inside of the screwplate there was a clearly discernable raised 'crossed sword' mark. It is on the area where the screw passes through the plate and the mark is therefore partially "damaged". I naturally checked my other orders and found that another polar star type3 serial#1035 had this same marking on its screwplate. I'm curious, is this a known mark with the soviet guys? Is this just a trivial little detail or does it possible suggest an origin for the plates, if not for the orders them selves? Anyway like I said earlier this might rank high on the "sillymeter" but any info and/or theories are more than welcome! JC

Mongolia Education and Science Badges
fjcp replied to Ed_Haynes's topic in People's Republic Mongolia
Ed, I hope to be able to help on the dictionary front pretty soon. I just bought the Bawden dictionary and I'll look it up once it gets here. Some time this week I hope. -
Point taken, didn't realize just how chaotic it was!! So Jacky, just pretend I didn't write that!! So by the looks of things whenever they needed one they just grabbed one from the safe and assigned it!! Way to go! JC
-
HI there Jacky, I hope you like the order and if possible could you please post a picture or two of it? From the order date/variation thread, the best I could do as far as issue date is concerned is the follwing: Order of Polar Star 3,917 30/12/1956 Screwback; Cyrillic So my guess is that yours might be from late 1957 or so. Cheers JC (Floor)

Thank you Paul, for the confirmation. It's always nice to get an expert opinion in these matters! Gordon, I think it's fair to say that yours is also a "small kite" variation! Lucky US!!!! JC

I was wondering if somebody could help me. I'm trying to determine which variation this medal is. I have included a comparison picture, but even that hasn't made it 100% clear to me yet. I believe it is the "small kite" variation but I might be wrong. Thanks in advance! JC

Great set you have there Ed.!!! Just got my first screwback in, still looking for a documented one though!!! JC
