Austria-Hungary Help PLEASE!
Christian Zulus replied to Riley1965's topic in Austro-Hungarian Empire
Dear Doc, that's a anniversary-medal celebrating 50 years (1848 - 1898) of the rule of Emporer Franz Joseph AND it seems to be a special medal for school-children, because the inscription at the rv. says: "To the children for the anniversary celebration" The ribbon shows the colours of imperial Austria (= one part of the k.u.k.-Empire, the other part was Hungary): Black & gold. Retz is a very nice & charming small town with a long history in the north of Austria at the border to the Czech Republic. Retz is famous for it's excellent wines . Some links about Retz: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retz http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retz http://www.telebuero.at/retz/ http://www.riskommunal.at/retz/ (also in English!) http://www.tiscover.at/at/guide/32336sy,en...dex,1/home.html (English!) It is a very beautiful medal and I have never seen such a medal for children. Congratulations . Best regards Christian -

Yugoslavia YU Lapel Pins
Christian Zulus replied to Christian Zulus's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Staff-lapel-pin of Tito's yacht "Galeb" Gentlemen, Tito used a very large yacht, the "Galeb" (= seagull), for his journeys around the world. The ship is now on sale again: http://www.sybarites.org/2006/05/08/marsha...-auctioned-off/ and in a really bad condition . I got this - rather large - lapel pin from Branko Karakas, renowed YU-composer, conductor, JNA-colonel & personel director of music of the late Marshal Tito: He told me, that this was the lapel pin for the staff at Tito's yacht "Galeb". Best regards Christian BTW: I asked Branko which military orders - as a colonel - he got from Tito. He told me, that he received all the 3rd classes of most of them . -
YU Lapel Pins Gentlemen, as the Soviet Union, communist Yugoslavia had a lot of lapel pins in all fields. Please show your collection . For some unknown or rare ones, we might find out their specific meaning & function. Best regards Christian

Soviet Soviet & Eastern Block Quiz
Christian Zulus replied to Christophe's topic in Russia: Soviet: Other Militaria
Gentlemen, congratulations to Frank & Wild Card . Wild Card had been first to answer part 1 of my question: Lazar Kaganovich http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazar_Kaganovich . But Frank answered the parts 2, 3 & 4 of my question in a comprehensive and correct way. So 3/4 of victory to Frank and 1/4 of victory to Wild Card . I think it is correct, to give the victory to Frank and he will give a new - #132 - of his extra-difficult questions to us . Project 26: Light or heavy cruisers ? The above introduced book of Rohwer/Monakov calls the project 26 just cruiser - neither light, nor heavy. Rohwer/Monakov list two classes of Soviet cruisers: - Cruisers (like project 26) - Battlecruisers (like the Kronstadt, which you can see at the cover of their book) Due to the fact, that project 26 are no battlecruisers, Wikipedia calls them "light cruisers" at the Lazar Kaganovich entry. Well, I think we should call the Lazar Kaganovich a cruiser, as stated in Rohwer/Monakov. She is not a heavy cruiser (= battlecruiser). Frank, it's now your turn again .... Best regards Christian -

Christian Zulus replied to Gordon Craig's topic in Central & Eastern European States
Dear Charles, many thanks for your expertise . Well, the badge doesen't look sooooo old, so it might be a 3rd class. It's really strange, the 3rd class looks much more impressive, than 1st & 2nd class . Best regards Christian
