    1. For Belgian Civilian War Wounded ?? Will it be given by the Government or do the recipients have to buy it themselves at their own expence ?? Kevin in Deva.
    2. It comes under "Patriotika," its not an official military piece, probably, bought by a soldier to give his Mum or girlfriend etc..etc.. Kevin in Deva.
    3. Hallo Gents, I think that there is a misconception that anything with the ribbon shaped in a bow is a ladies award. I have never seen reference to ladies wearing multiple ribbons in this manner. (as in post 1). The pictures shown on post "4" to the left looks like a typical Ladies Bow. More Bavarian Red Cross awards: Kevin in Deva.
    4. Seeing as all able-bodied men were needed for the front he probably got sent off to be a real soldier, He (Roepke) did tell Cooper (a member of the Permanent Staff of the B.F.C.) he was not sorry to be going, probably referring to the fact that this unit was so ill planned from conception and due to total mismanagement was never going to achieve anything anyway. His replacement K?hlich was an ex-officer of the Das Reich division of the Waffen-SS, whose severe wounds, sustained on the Eastern Front, had left him unfit for active combat duty. Kevin in Deva.
    5. SS-Hauptsturmf?hrer Hans Werner Roepke. Arnold Hillen-Ziegfeld. Obergruppehf?hrer Berger. At the SS-Pioneer school at Wildermann Kaserne, Dresden. "Fred" St?rmer, Medical Orderly. Ropeke relieved of command November 1 1944. Replaced by: SS-Obersturmf?hrer Dr. Walter K?hlich. Kevin in Deva.
    6. No, this is very typical to find converted this way, usually mounted so as to hide the converted ribbon ring. as these medals originally came with a oblong ribbon Ose peculiar to the State of Baden and a devil to hang straight. Kevin in Deva
    7. Hallo hipnos Unless I am mistaken that style of thin bladed swords on the ribbon, are only given with the Combatant version of the Kyffershauserbund medal as well. Kevin in Deva
    8. Hallo Paul, it is possible that the history of the Irish Military in the Congo in the 1960's is not too well documented or known about outside of Ireland. Examples with regards the Irish Congo UN Mission: 1. The Battle of Jadotville, where, "A" Company of the Irish Defence Forces, comprising roughly 150 men with only light arms, and outnumbered by at least 20 to 1, held their positions for five days against sustained artillery and aerial bombardment. "During that time they inflicted casualties of over 300 on opposing Katanga Forces and held their positions until they ran out of ammunition, food and water. While a number of attempts were made to relieve them, even by Gurkhas, none were successful. The members of "A" Company showed tremendous courage, bravery and valour." As the Daily Mail stated at the time 'they fought like tigers'. 2. Ireland clears Congo soldiers of cowardice. 10. With regards the two medals in this thread, they are NOT allowed to be worn on the military uniform of serving members of the Reserve Defence Force or Slua Muire (the F.C.A being officially stood down.) They were of private manufacture and solely for the use on the Blazer's of retired members of the F.C.A. / S.M. / R.D.F. Kevin in Deva.
    11. Should we start a separate thread for WW2 items? Or shall we take it that any bar, pre or including the 1934 Hindenberg, II Reich is ok here in this section?? Just asking as the only two items I have are a Non-combatant Hindenberg and a III Reich Military Service two medal Spange, both with the same maker label as already posted from Stuttgart. Kevin in Deva.
    12. The Naval Reserve (An Slua Muire) version of the 50th Anniversary of the F.C.A. Medal. Only the reverse is different from the Army Reserve Medal. Obverse: A barrack scene is in the back ground with two F.C.A. soldiers in the foreground . The Soldier on the left carries a .303 Lee Enfield rifle and dressed in a short blouse type uniform. The soldier on the right carries an F.N. 7.62 rifle and is dressed in the present No 1 uniform. The date of the foundation of the F.C.A. which is recorded in history is on the left, 1946 and, on the right is the date 1996, the 50th Anniversary of the F.C.A. Reverse: The Inscription ?An Slua Muire? in slightly raised letters with a raised rim and centre circle with space for the recipient?s name. Ribbon: Green to represent Ireland its volunteer and the colour of the uniform worn by the F.C.A. Suspension: An plain straight bar is fixed to the medal with the ribbon threaded through. Designer: Mr. Frank Lane. Manufactures: M.M.I. Ltd Ireland. Kevin in Deva.
    13. Hallo Gents very recently this item was placed under the virtual hammer: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...A:IT&ih=022 Sellers Description: End of Seller Blurb. The medal sold for GB115.51p Its is an unofficial Commemorative item, designed and paid for by a Mr. Frank Lane. Some basic research revealed the following: Kevin in Deva.
    14. Apparently, what has happened with regards this medal is that, an Irish U.N. Veterans of Lebanon group, claim have received permission to obtain these medals from Lebanon, the story says part of the price for the medal, (I was quoted 86 Euro) goes to a wounded Lebanese Soldiers Fund!! There is some controversial debate as to if that is actually happening. The medal is not recognised as an official award by the Irish Military, so there cannot be worn on the service uniform. Kevin in Deva.
    15. Hallo Gents, rather than double post here is a link to two Lebanese Military Merit Medals arrived today (29-02-2008) for my collection direct from Lebanon. http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=2592...t=0#entry244616 Kevin in Deva.
    16. Hallo hipnos, Congratulations on obtaining some beautiful medal bars, I like the Romanian bars very much. If I may make a comment, the Russian Medal that you describe as: "Russian Independence of Romania Medal" I think its more correctly known as: " Medal for Participants in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 - 1878". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Turkish_War,_1877-1878 Kevin in Deva
    17. Hallo Tiger-Pie, some great pictures, many thanks for posting Kevin in Deva.
    18. Hallo Enzo, If you have a picture of a zink version could you please post for comparison? Kevin in Deva
    19. Hallo Ceallach thanks for posting these numbers, so it seems that in 1988 no Private 3*, Trooper 3* or equivalent rank in the Navy, or Corporal were deemed worthy of the medal And in 1989 only 2 lowly corporals, 1 Trooper, 6 Privates and 1 Gunner, rated the medal. Yet in both lists 17 Company Quarter Master Sergeants received it!!! No wonder the medal caused such controversy. Is there any where that a list of recipient's by name can be located?? Kevin in Deva.
    20. Hallo Irish 1916 when you say issued, can you clarify by who? I think if it was for such an auspicious occasion, it might have more features connecting it to the event. Is there any proof that it is other than a Celtic Design influenced tie pin?? Kevin in Deva.
    21. Hallo JensF. Check out the following website: http://www.purplehearts.net/index.html Kevin in Deva.
    22. I agree about the pin hinge its set crooked, would such sloppy work be tolerated back then? Kevin in Deva.
    23. Hallo redcross But, I am also asking now is the large gold cross a fantasy piece as well. I can find no reference of a Mecklenberg Cross for 1813 with "F.W." on the centre. or even a ruler from that state with the initials F.W. Kevin in Deva.
