Hallo Gents, I think that there is a misconception that anything with the ribbon shaped in a bow is a ladies award. I have never seen reference to ladies wearing multiple ribbons in this manner. Hallo Paul, it is possible that the history of the Irish Military in the Congo in the 1960's is not too well documented or known about outside of Ireland. Examples with regards the Irish Congo UN Mission: 1. The Battle of Jadotville, where, "A" Company of the Irish Defence Forces, comprising roughly 150 men with only light arms, and outnumbered by at least 20 to 1, held their positions for five days against sustained artillery and aerial bombardment. "During that time they inflicted casualties of over 300 on opposing Katanga Forces and held their positions until they ran out of ammunition, food and water. While a number of attempts were made to relieve them, even by Gurkhas, none were successful. The members of "A" Company showed tremendous courage, bravery and valour." With regards the two medals in this thread, they are NOT allowed to be worn on the military uniform of serving members of the Reserve Defence Force or Slua Muire (the F.C.A being officially stood down.) They were of private manufacture and solely for the use on the Blazer's of retired members of the F.C.A. / S.M. / R.D.F. Kevin in Deva.

The Naval Reserve (An Slua Muire) version of the 50th Anniversary of the F.C.A. Medal. Only the reverse is different from the Army Reserve Medal. Obverse: A barrack scene is in the back ground with two F.C.A. soldiers in the foreground . The Soldier on the left carries a .303 Lee Enfield rifle and dressed in a short blouse type uniform. The soldier on the right carries an F.N. 7.62 rifle and is dressed in the present No 1 uniform. Apparently, what has happened with regards this medal is that, an Irish U.N. Veterans of Lebanon group, claim have received permission to obtain these medals from Lebanon, the story says part of the price for the medal, (I was quoted 86 Euro) goes to a wounded Lebanese Soldiers Fund!! There is some controversial debate as to if that is actually happening. The medal is not recognised as an official award by the Irish Military, so there cannot be worn on the service uniform. Hallo Ceallach thanks for posting these numbers, so it seems that in 1988 no Private 3*, Trooper 3* or equivalent rank in the Navy, or Corporal were deemed worthy of the medal And in 1989 only 2 lowly corporals, 1 Trooper, 6 Privates and 1 Gunner, rated the medal. Yet in both lists 17 Company Quarter Master Sergeants received it!!! No wonder the medal caused such controversy. Is there any where that a list of recipient's by name can be located??
