Hallo Gents, I think that there is a misconception that anything with the ribbon shaped in a bow is a ladies award. I have never seen reference to ladies wearing multiple ribbons in this manner. (as in post 1). The pictures shown on post "4" to the left looks like a typical Ladies Bow. More Bavarian Red Cross awards: Kevin in Deva.

Seeing as all able-bodied men were needed for the front he probably got sent off to be a real soldier, He (Roepke) did tell Cooper (a member of the Permanent Staff of the B.F.C.) he was not sorry to be going, probably referring to the fact that this unit was so ill planned from conception and due to total mismanagement was never going to achieve anything anyway. His replacement K?hlich was an ex-officer of the Das Reich division of the Waffen-SS, whose severe wounds, sustained on the Eastern Front, had left him unfit for active combat duty. Kevin in Deva.

Hallo Paul, it is possible that the history of the Irish Military in the Congo in the 1960's is not too well documented or known about outside of Ireland. Examples with regards the Irish Congo UN Mission: 1. The Battle of Jadotville, where, "A" Company of the Irish Defence Forces, comprising roughly 150 men with only light arms, and outnumbered by at least 20 to 1, held their positions for five days against sustained artillery and aerial bombardment. "During that time they inflicted casualties of over 300 on opposing Katanga Forces and held their positions until they ran out of ammunition, food and water. While a number of attempts were made to relieve them, even by Gurkhas, none were successful. The members of "A" Company showed tremendous courage, bravery and valour." As the Daily Mail stated at the time 'they fought like tigers'. 2. Ireland clears Congo soldiers of cowardice. With regards the two medals in this thread, they are NOT allowed to be worn on the military uniform of serving members of the Reserve Defence Force or Slua Muire (the F.C.A being officially stood down.) They were of private manufacture and solely for the use on the Blazer's of retired members of the F.C.A. / S.M. / R.D.F. Kevin in Deva.

Should we start a separate thread for WW2 items? Or shall we take it that any bar, pre or including the 1934 Hindenberg, II Reich is ok here in this section?? Just asking as the only two items I have are a Non-combatant Hindenberg and a III Reich Military Service two medal Spange, both with the same maker label as already posted from Stuttgart. Apparently, what has happened with regards this medal is that, an Irish U.N. Veterans of Lebanon group, claim have received permission to obtain these medals from Lebanon, the story says part of the price for the medal, (I was quoted 86 Euro) goes to a wounded Lebanese Soldiers Fund!! There is some controversial debate as to if that is actually happening. The medal is not recognised as an official award by the Irish Military, so there cannot be worn on the service uniform. Kevin in Deva.

Hallo hipnos, Congratulations on obtaining some beautiful medal bars, I like the Romanian bars very much. If I may make a comment, the Russian Medal that you describe as: "Russian Independence of Romania Medal" I think its more correctly known as: " Medal for Participants in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 - 1878". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Turkish_War,_1877-1878 Kevin in Deva

Hallo Enzo, If you have a picture of a zink version could you please post for comparison? Kevin in Deva -
Hallo Ceallach thanks for posting these numbers, so it seems that in 1988 no Private 3*, Trooper 3* or equivalent rank in the Navy, or Corporal were deemed worthy of the medal And in 1989 only 2 lowly corporals, 1 Trooper, 6 Privates and 1 Gunner, rated the medal. Yet in both lists 17 Company Quarter Master Sergeants received it!!! No wonder the medal caused such controversy. Is there any where that a list of recipient's by name can be located?? Kevin in Deva.

Republic of Ireland Irish 1916-20
Kev in Deva replied to Kev in Deva's topic in Northern European & Baltic States
Hallo Irish 1916 when you say issued, can you clarify by who? I think if it was for such an auspicious occasion, it might have more features connecting it to the event. Is there any proof that it is other than a Celtic Design influenced tie pin?? Kevin in Deva. -

Hallo Noor, many of them were used as monuments, and were not in working order, I believe the Germans removed a few for the scrap metal value. Kevin in Deva.
