EK 1914 Screwback WW1 EK1

I have just got back from the Stockport Militaria Fair, from where I bought this super, (well I think so), EK1. It has a small screwback with oval backing / retaining plate. The iron core moves slightly within the frame, and the cross itself appears to have a high silver content. Although it doesn't show to well in these photos, the core has a superb gloss or enamelled look to it, which looks really nice. There are no makers or other marks on it.

This one is the first imperial I see with the pin at the backplate....this is a strange one(but I remember there's one with a"Deumer" core using the same kind of washer.

Looking at the frame etc on this one, I believe this is a Godet produced piece. I wondered about the spike myself, but I have absolutely no doubt as to it's originality. It actually looks far better in the hand than it looks in these photos. Besides strange and unusual are what make this hobby so interesting, and keep us coming back for more !

Micha, Stunning EK I, first combination that I have seen exactly like that but a real keeper in super condition. I would assume it was manufactured by one of the "better maker."

Here are a pair of Godet EKs. The pinback is marked "G" on the pin.

The screwback is unmarked but is identical (core and frame beading)

to the pinback.

These crosses belong to Tiger1.

Please dont get me wrong-of course I think this one is the real deal! Have you seen Mike's comparison at the WAF? So it could be also Meybauer! But anyway-this is definitely another one at my endless "wanted"list!

I've been taking part in that discussion as well. It may very well be

a Meybauer BUT I still lean towards Godet. Meybauer was very proud

of there products they stamped everthing sometimes 4 or 5 marks on a

single cross. ( I know that there a most likely unmarked examples as

well) Most of the Meybauer screwbacks use a small round nut with a single

wire loop attached sometimes marked with a DRGM number, sometimes

marked PM. We have all seen examples of these.--------On Tony's and

Davids cross we see a completely different arrangment and in Tony's

case it is an identical match to a marked Godet. So I think it is more

of an indication of it being Godet and not Meybauer.

We will probably never know 100% untill we see a marked example. These

are just my views on it. I recognise that Mike and Micha are much more

experienced than I am and I value their expertice.

I too was part of that discussion, and I still contend that it is a unmarked Godet. Nevertheless, it is one that I would love to have in my collection.

Thanks to all who have commented and contributed to this thread. Whether these EKs are Godet or Meybauer, (and after being pointed in the direction of Godet and doing some comparisons, they look like Godet to me as well), they are, in my opinion, beautiful pieces of work and I feel very lucky to have one in my collection.
