webr55
Gentlemen, I recently got this set of ?political? ribbon bars to the same person, an NSDAP functionary and ex-WW1 fighter (probably as a plain Gefreiter). It?s nice to see the progression: Between the first and the second bar, the wearer had realised that Austria now belonged to the Reich, and therefore shifted the Austrian Commemorative to its proper place. Most probably this happened around 1939, so the wearer had already got this NSDAP 10 by them and must have been an old fighter. The third, wartime bar adds just a KVK2. Also, the bars have three different backings: Green with Sedlatzek tag, dark blue and apparently a grey-ish one (some threads left). Any other ideas about these bars? Guest Rick Research
VERY nice!Actually, the NSDAP long services were first bestowed on 30 January 1940... so he was a bit SLOW on getting news about the Anschluss! Considering that Austrian Nazis had murdered Chancellor Dollfuss and tried to overthrow the government in Vienna by armed coup in 1934, it is rather surprising that a German Nazi would even have HAD the Austrian WW1 Commemorative Medal. It was such a nice design (and more "Third Reich" looking than a lot of Real German medals) that he must have concealed his Party status when he applied for it! This is a very nice set indeed showing this guy's life over several years-- and it is always to actually SEE such progression. Quite unusual too, since most sets get split apart forever.Exactly what uniform he was wearing for all or some of these is obscured by the shifts in backing material. There is never any way to guess rank from a Party long service anyway. But you are right-- he was probably a last year of WW1 teenager.Since NO actual service WITH the troops of Austria, Hungary, or Bulgaria was required for their WW1 commemorative medals (only the Tyrol required that)basically what you have is a then-middle aged guy too YOUNG in one war and too OLD in the other"stretching out" what would otherwise have ended up as a FOUR ribbon bar of KVK2X, HKX, NS10, Sudeten. Ah yes, I forgot about that. So maybe the first bar was just an error, though it's hard to imagine Sedlatzek making such a mistake.
