How often do you see a period photo of an OR wearing an 1870 cross, as opposed to a greyhair taken years and years later ?

Quite an unusually dramatic pose-- given the photographic processes of the day, you can bet that "billowing in the wind" overcoat-as-cape was WIRED into that position.

Reminds me of when the wife took me to the Elton John concert and the guitar player had a special fan that blew his hair back during his solos :-)

It is difficult to be certain from the photograph but I get the impression he is some of form of non commissioned military official, perhaps a Zahlmeister-Aspirant or Waffenmeister of a mounted unit. He is not wearing a cavalry uniform.

Maybe taken a couple of years after the war when he had left his unit? The guy I got it from just knew he was in the cavalry, maybe became an official soon afterwards?
