Christian Zulus Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Marian Furlan & Henad Bjelos: YUGOSLAVIA ARMY INSIGNIA & DECORATIONS 1918-1990Gentlemen,in 1991 the "Militaria House" in Toronto published - in English language - that well known small guide to YU Military Awards, which covers on 92 pages not only Tito's army, but also the Royal Army since 1918. The book contains - rather original sized - illustrations in black and white. It starts with the brief sketch of the complex of Yugoslav history, from medieval Kingdom of Serbia, Djordje Petrovic and his rebellion against the Turks, Serbian independence under Prince Milos Obrenovic, to the Balkan League, assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and beginning of World War I, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, World War II and Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia under Tito.ISBN: 9780929757438 Militaria House, 238 Davenport Road, P.O. Box 99, Toronto, Ontario, M5R 1J6, CanadaEvery now and then, you can find the booklet for about USD 20,- at e-bay or Amazon. In the moment, there is now offer somewhere in the internet .It is a small book in b/w, which covers only the military awards, but better than nothing .Best regards Christian

Christian Zulus Posted April 1, 2007 Author Posted April 1, 2007 hello, I have this book and it DOES cover civilian orders and medals !Dear "seb16trs",that are good news - thanks for the important information .I never managed to get a copy of that book .Best regards Christian
Ed_Haynes Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Seeking a good reference book (English-language preferred) that deals with Yugoslavian (1945-91) ODM, all of them not just some arbitrary "military" sub-set. Are there any suggestions??
Bryan Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I'm also looking for one since a long time, but it seems this is the only book in English unfortunately. Here are some examples from that book. As you will see the information is very basic and the pictures are not very good. YUGOSLAVIA ARMY INSIGNIA & DECORATIONS 1918-1990
Ed_Haynes Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I found a couple of copies (one is gone now ) on abebooks.com .
Ed_Haynes Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Sad, for this seems not to be much better than what we get in Hieronymussen, Rosignoli, or even Dorling or Werlich. Someone needs to do better!

pmargulies Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Dear Ed,well, I think, it's up to us, to publish a comprehensive book on YU-Awards .Best regards ChristianFor those looking for this book...go straight to Militaria House. They have a number of similar books on Eastern European nations. Nenad Bjelos, one of the co-authors, and Ranko Mandic are thinking about publishing a new book. Ranko did a small run book on Albanian ODM that was quite nice. Last I talked with Bjelos they were of the opinion that there wasn't enough interest to fund such a project. The book does have quite a bit of good informaton about number awarded, etc... but lacks a lot of information about the various types, makers, etc... I recommend it to anyone that is a collector of Yugo ODM.
Ed_Haynes Posted July 24, 2007 Posted July 24, 2007 Just got the book. And it is really QUITE disappointing. Poor quality of information, worse quality of images (even for 1991), and less than half the book relates to ODM of the socialist period and it totally ignores non-military stuff (OK, that wasn't quite the booklet's title, but one always hopes for better). The publisher, "pmargulies", seems to have no web presence (or, rather, it has died). If this same team is doing something else, I'd need to be convinced it is A LOT BETTER than this before spending any money on it.Am I sorry I bought it? Maybe. Would I buy it if I knew what I know now? Probably not. Will I throw it out? No.

They have a large series of books on Eastern Europe and all from the same time period - fall of communism. All of the books are the same set up. When I first got to Belgrade this was the only book I could find on the subject...I found a few more while I was there, but they were all in Serbian. I think my own personal feeling towards something like this is that I am better off having this book than not. The quality of the book done by Ranko Mandic on Albanien ODM was much better, but still not up to Western standards. And, both he and Nenad know that if they produce a book it needs to come up to those standards.

You had sinply referenced them, and they do not seem to exist online any more. Indicative? It is just that, were it a 1960s or even a 1970s publication, it would have been adequate enough, but as unfocused and incomplete and deficient and sloppy as it is for a 1990s pub from outside the country . . . grrrrr.Point being: tHe ecological niche for a good good on socialist Yugoslavian ODM is still well and truly open.If would be interesting to see what else this publisher has, but if this is a fair sample, . . . If their Albanian work is better than Eric's fine volume, I may forgive them this. "If".

Same set up as the Yugo book, but the information was much more scattered. I was looking for things like number of awards issued, etc... And, you hit the nail on the head...they are reminiscent of a 60s/70s era reference.
