The cap belonged to Korvettenkapit?n (Ing.) Nelson.

Not as crazy as it first sounds. There were several with British forebears serving in the WEhrmacht. The Luftwaffe had the Austrian-Scottish fighter ace Gordon McGollob, and alongside Nelson in the Kriegsmarine was Korvettenkapit?n Alistair MacLean (not the famous author  ).

The Germans must have just LOVED having Nelson serving in the Kriegsmarine, - surprised they didn't make greater propaganda use of that.

Nelson is not in the 1940 KM ranklist, so he must have been commissioned after that. Maybe someone with the 1944 ranklist could help.

BTW, the name is not that uncommon in German. There was a German philosopher Leonard Nelson, for example.

Rick has confirmed that there was an Assistenzarzt dR, Dr.med. Fritz Nelson in the Kaiserliche Marine, so if this Nelson is correct (no sign in the 1944 Rank List) he is not the first Nelson to serve in the German Navy. I had no idea it was not an uncommon name in Germany. Interesting.
