Gordon Williamson Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Stunning original Kriegsmarine senior ranks visor cap posted for Marc (Langemark). Never known anyone with such a talent for finding fabulous headgear. (Except for Michel !)
Gordon Williamson Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 Close up of embroidery - super quality. What does this have to do with Nelson I hear you ask ---------wait for it.
Gordon Williamson Posted November 2, 2007 Author Posted November 2, 2007 The cap belonged to Korvettenkapit?n (Ing.) Nelson. Not as crazy as it first sounds. There were several with British forebears serving in the WEhrmacht. The Luftwaffe had the Austrian-Scottish fighter ace Gordon McGollob, and alongside Nelson in the Kriegsmarine was Korvettenkapit?n Alistair MacLean (not the famous author ).The Germans must have just LOVED having Nelson serving in the Kriegsmarine, - surprised they didn't make greater propaganda use of that.
Martin W Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Gordon, that is one very fine visor, thanks for posting.Nice little story to go with it also.Regards,Martin.
nesredep Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Hello!GordonThank you for sharing this nice Visor.Looks to bee in very good shape. Best regardsNesredep
webr55 Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Nelson is not in the 1940 KM ranklist, so he must have been commissioned after that. Maybe someone with the 1944 ranklist could help.BTW, the name is not that uncommon in German. There was a German philosopher Leonard Nelson, for example.
Gordon Williamson Posted November 3, 2007 Author Posted November 3, 2007 Rick has confirmed that there was an Assistenzarzt dR, Dr.med. Fritz Nelson in the Kaiserliche Marine, so if this Nelson is correct (no sign in the 1944 Rank List) he is not the first Nelson to serve in the German Navy. I had no idea it was not an uncommon name in Germany. Interesting.
