It's the Coronation Medal in silver (was also issued in gold). My book is all in Thai (which I don't read), but I'm fairly confident this is the medal for the current king, Bhumibol. (Rama IX)

Speaking of reference books, can you recommend any books on the Orders & Medals of Thailand? In English would be great!

I don't know of anything other than that book in Thai (whose details have fallen through this brain's jetlagged swiss-cheese holes just now). Something good in English is needed on the whole range of Southeast Asian ODM, but I'm not sure there are folks out there with the requisite language and research skills.

There are a couple of Thai government publications with English captions on the photos, but none have the background of the medals in English. These are lavish productions and expensive, with limited utility.

I use Ernst Blass' "Die Orden und Ehrenzeichen von Thailand", a little paperback with black and white photos. Undated, but published in the 1980s, I think. The German text is far easier to work with than the Thai.

I believe that you are correct. It is the Silver Coronation Medal Rama IX. 35mm in diameter with white ribbon and alternating 5mm white/yellow stripes. It is in the Harry Mohler collection at Stanford. There is also, of course, the Gold Coronation Medal of similar design.
