Christian L
i want to follow and show a mini of a red eagle order - its a big mini of the early 4th class - no enamel in the center so, what do you think?(hope the pics are ok - if not, i'll try to get better ones on the weekend)christian
Stogieman
Hi Christian... it is odd to think of this as "early" when the arms are pebbled as in the "late" style. What are the dimensions? never seen one like this before?
medalnet
Very interesting, is it hollow?
Christian L
its 21 mm from arm to arm, and massive! (but very thin)(not thought about the pebbling and the medaillon - so its very strange, but the details are really good, and its, at least for me, no know copy)hope you can help me, bringing light into the darkness!christian
Stogieman
Hi Christian, I wasn't thinking copy........ just curious as to the mixture of "early/late" styles. I think the workmanship is too good to be a copy.
Christian L
so whats it - or better say it like this: who "needed" an early center late arms mini?christian
Stogieman
An excellent question Christian..... I think not so much made special for someone, lapel chains & buttoniers, barettes, etc. date back to the Napoleonic eras..... but it sure would be interesting if there was anyway to delineate exactly what era this piece was from! The first model was used c.1830 as I recall, so it would be someone who was awarded the 1st model and needed a mini after 1864. Not that big of a stretch, perhaps he displayed his original and told the jeweler he "needed a mini like this" That is the only reason I can think of that it would have been made with no enamel. The jeweler is not going to turn away business and made him what he wanted. Dan Murphy
Stogieman
Interesting and plausible theory. I've been going through my archives and I cannot find a single mini for the RAO like this. But again, I would date every example I've seen as post 1910...
