Alex K Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 My France and Germany Star just arrived this morning. What do you all think? Thanks again!JasonNo problems from my perspectiveregardsAlex
jshorter Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 And finally, my Air Crew Europe Star arrived! Sorry for the low quality photos, but I wanted to get an idea about it before I finalized the deal with the seller. It is in very good condition as the medal (according to the seller) was stored in the original waxed paper envelope (which was included). Please let me know what you all think.... I can provide additional photos if needed later tonight. Thanks!Jason
Ed_Haynes Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 From a good source? A known dealer or some eBay scam-artist? Never having seen a single one in my area of interest, So I'm not of much help . . . but, in my area, they'd (presumably?) be named.
jshorter Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 They said they originally purchased it from Dixon's Medalshttp://www.dixonsmedals.co.ukJason
Ed_Haynes Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) Personally, I'd trust Chris 150%Solid source usually means a solid medal. And if it isn't, a good source will take it back.BUT "they" said "they" got it from him . . . why not just buy from Dixon?? Edited March 9, 2009 by Ed_Haynes
jshorter Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 BUT "they" said "they" got it from him . . . why not just buy from Dixon??They didn't have any Air Crew Europe Stars available at the time of my purchase.
Guest Darrell Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Here's my ACE (attributed to a Canadian KIA).

Guest Darrell Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 (edited) Here are some additional photos to help with your evaluations. JasonJason, I like the color and look of these two pictures, but not so much the other closeups. Just wondering if there is some wierd color / detail distortion happening? The letters and all the small things you look for appear to be correct. What does trouble me are the lack of defintion of the letters. Compare the letters of yours with mine.Again, it maybe those pictures. They look dramatically different than the ones on top. Edited March 10, 2009 by Darrell
Ed_Haynes Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I assumed Jason wasn't scanning his, so the chances for image deviance have been maximised?
jshorter Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 I will try some different camera settings. I can never seem to get high quality close ups. If I use the flash, there is a glare, if I don't, it is too hard to see details. Let me try some other shots and settings......
jshorter Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 Here are some more photos. No matter what I do, I can't get the color/focus/clarity all set in the same photo. Anyway, hope these will help some!!Jason
jshorter Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 I took some more photos tonight. These were taken outside under a cloudy sky with a flash.Jason
Richard Gordon Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I know diddly-squat about stars but are these flaws normal??
jshorter Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 They are actually "dings" to the medal from what appears to be a sharp pointed object (possibly the points of another Star....).Jason

HenkWillem Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Here is a photo of the 39-45 star that I had bought as a copy.

Ed_Haynes Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Unbelievable! I do not believe I have ever seen worse. And for a common medal.
HenkWillem Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 yeah, I know. I have bought it because I allready have an original example and it is good reference material.
stusckkr Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I took some more photos tonight. These were taken outside under a cloudy sky with a flash. Jason
Mervyn Mitton Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) Jason - is this the original ACE Star that you were discussing back in 2009 ? My general observation point for Stars is the stippling - the little raised dots behind the wording. There are of course several other ways to authenticate - and I think they were discussed earlier. Purely as a comment - I would not be 100% happy with this Star - there are areas where the stippling is not covering the entire area. Having said that it does appear to have reasonably even spacing, although not an exact sizing - a sure give away for some copies. From all of the Stars, Air Crew Europe is the most commonly copied one - purely from the price point of view. Perhaps worth a little closer examination ? Edited March 6, 2011 by Mervyn Mitton
